BIG BUCKS BATTLE
Super Cat Teams Donate Winning Checks to
Ft. Lauderdale Offshore Gran Prix’s Kids in Distress Charity

9/1003 - - Win or lose, the Kids In Distress Organization of Oakland Park, Florida will truly be in Victory Lane as the Ft. Lauderdale Offshore Gran Prix Powerboat Races head to Ft. Lauderdale Beach the weekend of October 3rd & 4th, 2003.

As competitors line up for what is expected to be the largest fleet of racers in South Florida history, heavy weight Super Cat Competitors, Gary Montano of the Montano-Hartmann Motorsports owned Bacardi Silver" Team; Tom Abrams of the Reliable Carriers Team, and Jose "Pepe" Llama of WHM Motorsports Team have pulled up to the starting line with a total of $3000.00 in donations for Kids In Distress.

"Gary Montano, owner of the Montano-Hartmann Motorsports "Bacardi Silver" team actually started the race onshore by offering a check for $1,000.00 to be donated on behalf of the winning Super Cat Team directly to Kids In Distress. When Tom Abrams, of owner of the "Reliable Carriers" team heard about the donation, he joined in by matching it with another $1,000.00. Then, Jose "Pepe" Llama of WHM Motorsports called to enter and jumped in with his $1,000.00. The generosity of our racers spans worldwide, and we are bringing that home to KID the weekend of the race, " said Michelle May – Schmidt, Producer of the Ft. Lauderdale Offshore Gran Prix.

Schmidt adds those contributions to another one, a $20,000.00 from Lanier Harbor Marina’s Barkley Geib Family of Buford, Georgia, which will go to fund the Child SMILE America Room at KID. A total of $75,000.00 will be raised over a period of five years, or sooner, all due to the enthusiasm and support of these world-class race teams.

As an added plus to the donations, Geib will join powerboat racing dentist, Dr. Gerardo Santiago of the Zero Cavity Race Team to provide powerboat rides over race weekend for the children from Kids In Distress in his PokerRun.com Formula FasTech, an Official Paceboat for the event.

"It’s all about the little people," said Geib, known as the "Santa Claus of Offshore" for the giving he does all year long to a number of children’s charities nationwide, as part of the Child SMILE America Tour. Kids In Distress, a beneficiary of the Tour, is a nationally recognized charity that provides counseling and shelter to severely abused children in Broward County.

"We want to help the kids, that’s why we’re coming," said Montano, a Milford, Connecticut resident of his defending National Championship Team that includes Hugh Fuller, Driver from Clearwater, and John Tomlinson, throttleman, of North Miami, Florida.

"Win or lose is not the issue, if we can make a difference in the life of a child. That’s the real checkered flag," said Abrams of Northville, Michigan, owner/driver of Reliable Carriers. He joins Jerry Gilbreath, throttleman from Priest River, Idaho.

"I have been very fortunate in my life," said Llama of San Juan, Puerto Rico, key player in the success of the WHM Motorsports Team, who jumps into the throttle position alongside owner/driver Bill Mauff of Long Island, New York. "When it’s for the kids, we are there."

While the competition onshore continues for a great cause, the offshore war on the water will be a deck to deck battle to the finish in the Super Cat Class with Bacardi Silver holding a strong 97-point lead ahead of the second ranked WHM. WHM, however, is just a mere 13 points ahead of Reliable.

A total of 80 boats from 24’ to 46’ in length are expected to compete in the Ft. Lauderdale Offshore Gran Prix with the fastest fleet, the Super Cats, boasting speeds in excess of 140+ miles per hour. Fans can expect to see the Cats premier in the first heat of racing competition beginning on Saturday, October 4th at 11:00am.

The public is invited to meet the Super Cat Teams, as well as all the competitors over race weekend at the New Auto Toy Store Thunder Row Race Pits, hosted at the Radisson Bahia Mar Beach Resort. Tickets are available at the gate for $10 per day or $15 for both days. Kids 12 and under free.
