What is a jackshaft?

Ignorant as I am: What is a jackshaft in performance boating, and why should I have one?

I know jack about the shafts. Is it simply a shaft that connects the engine with the drive?

Yes

Very similar to the drive shaft on a car-may be supported in the middle by a bearing if it's long.

Gotcha, Ted. Thanks! BTW, those center bearings are sometimes also used to stop the shaft from beating everything to death if a coupling breaks ...

Actually, that would be considered a Jack Shaft Guard.
