We certainly would be willing to build a 24 or 23 for the class. We also have a 19 as well.

My hat is off to the SOB guys. You are what racing is about, you have a class to offer, found a sanctioning body (OPA) and are moving forward.

This will be a great class and potentially the backbone of offshore racing.

I know Ocke Mannerfelt (bat boats) has some boats for this class racing in Europe. With that being the case what an opportunity for Chris Reindl to expand the number of boats he has racing in the US.

Chris,

As much as I would love to see your boats run with these guys, and the fact that a race class is already in place for your Bat Boats, by a Majority Vote so far on the rules proposal, the racers have opted not to allow any Wing Styled Boats, Tunnel Vees or Catamarans in this class.
They are going to try to keep it strictly 20ft 7"(21) to 24 ft conventional vee bottom with or without steps and or pads.
Should you have something in the works without the wings, by all means, bring it on!;)
These guys sound like they love competition! :)

Sounds to me like these guys hate innovation, safety, competition and a large class. UIM runs similar rules and ocke's boats do very well there and are popular -BECAUSE THEY ARE SAFER. Looking at the above PICS of the open canopy boats shooting toward the moon, is there anything safe about that? There are always ways to slow a boat down to make it competitive with other boat styles. We would be willing to start with a 500 lb weight penalty and go from there... increasing it if our boats were to "run away" from the class.

Obviously with the class we run we enjoy tight racing. Where else have officials had to say they could not tell which one won a race because they were too close?

Worst case scenario is we run to fast and add more weight to slow us down. Let me know what they say, but it doesn't sound like they like competition to me.

DPT MOTORSPORTS 12-10-2003 08:12 PM

Chris,

Please do not take this as a slap in the face or anything like that. Starting off fresh like this we are trying to keep everything as SIMPLE as possible. Being that the SOB's are not off the ground as of yet we do not want to discourage anyone thinking of running this class. Thus, a majority vote was won in favor of the terms that SharkeyMarine stated. The Bats do have a competitive edge over the V bottoms slated to be participating already.

I do want you to know that You and Your Bats were brought up and talked about numerously over the course of meetings and discussion so far. Once things are more slated either Sharkey or I will be in touch sometime after the holidays. You are a great business man and racer. I promise you that will be in touch with you to discuss things further in a professional manner.
I look forward to our future discussions after the Holidays.

Thank You,
Dennis P Tracey

After speaking with Kurt & Smitty on Friday night, they are both optimistic that things can be worked out to get the SOB's out there racing.

Their largest concern seem to be the safety as well as the top-end speed of these boats.

After our discussions, I feel that the SOB's will have a place in this organization.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone again at Saturday's meeting.

Please try to arrive early. We only have the place till 3PM.

Thanks again for everyone's support!

SHARKEY-IMAGES 12-13-2003 02:05 AM

This just may be the year!

It was just over a year ago that we had these great supporters of the SOB's.
With this year's enthusiasm from all sides, this year, it just may become a reality...

Great showing today by the SOBs. Hopefully it will all come together and the OPA family will grow by embracing this new class.

SHARKEY-IMAGES 12-14-2003 12:53 AM

Everything went great at the meeting Saturday!
The OPA will take back our thoughts about the SOB's and go over each point that was discussed. They said they will have a final decision in the next couple of weeks. Everyone is very optimistic that this could work. Throughout the entire meeting, I did not hear anyone say anything about keeping the organization to only 5 classes. I feel that is a positive sign.
The SOB's will be waiting their reply.....
Thanks to all that turned out for the support of the SOB's, including those of you that are already racing P1-P5. You made it clear by telling OPA you want them to do whatever it takes to add boats to the organization.
Thank you!

DPT MOTORSPORTS 12-14-2003 01:42 AM

THANK YOU!!!!!

Along with everything SharkeyMarine stated in the previous post I would also like to say Thank You to OPA and all the Racers that really showed the support we received from all of you today. I would also like to add a Thank You to Rich Luhrs for making a great the opening presentation for the SOB's today.

Fixed Costs & Schedule

Fixed Costs & Schedule
So far, here is some info for the SOB's that were unable to attend the meeting Saturday:

Annual OPA Membership..............................$100.00

Annual Equipment Registration:..................$450.00

Per Event Registration P1 - P5....................$500.00

Per Event Reg. for SOB's ..........."To Be Determined"

We will wait and see what the OPA proposal has to say as far as the race entry fee for the SOB's.
There is a chance, they may agree on a flat fee per race. The more SOB's we can get to the race, the cheaper it would be for everyone. That is one option. The other option is pay $500.00 per race with no purse, and let $250 of that go towards the additional insurance and helicopter.

Bottom line, they would like to see the SOB's cover the actual costs that it may take to put on separate race.
If the rough water races only allow one race , then of course the costs are reduced, but you may all be ran in P-5 class but scored separately.
Again, we will wait and see what they come up with.

Schedule:
June 26 & 27th.........Brick, NJ

July 17th & 18th.........Atlantic City, NJ

Aug. 12th & 13th......Pt Plsnt. Bch., NJ

There seem to be two new issues:

1. Is the name S.O.B. an issue vs P-OB class for instance?....

2. Will the S.O.B's race with, or include, inboards?

Points to ponder over hot toddy......

Merry Christmas.

#1

S.O.B. is kinda catchy and self explanatory.
Being an issue? I don't think these guys much care what it's called, as long as they can get affordable racing on the circuit for themselves.
I think we also already have enough P in the water...:D

#2

It was voted down on our rules proposal. The outboards only wanted to race against other outboards with 21 to 24 ft boats.

We will see what the final decision is after another meeting with the powers of OPA.

Very nice styling too! Looks like a scaled down Outerlimits.

One is for sale @ New Jersey Outboards in Bayville, NJ.
It is currently rigged with new 225 HO Evinrude. Has a Hydraulic jack plate and runs around 80mph.

Beautiful boat! All white, ready for your colors.....
