What happened to One Design?

seadog 04-04-2004 06:38 PM

They are racing OSS I heard.

BRUCE SEROFF 04-04-2004 09:29 PM

the bat boats were here.I agree with Mark. I just dont think there were any takers.

kitten 04-04-2004 10:01 PM

We drove bat boats in our own Happy Hour. Thanks Chris!! :mouse:

I got to drive!

SHARKEY-IMAGES 04-05-2004 03:55 AM

22 Boats,11 Classes, and 4 Classes with only 1 entry each.

Are these numbers correct?

I sure hope to see more boats come out this year.

Driving around on a race course with only one boat in a class doesn't sound like racing to me....:(

I see Great Adventure still hasn't lost their winning touch...

Unfortunately it was by default...

Bruce, You broke out?

does to me too!
It takes alot of effort to get out there so early, April, stay together, and get used to your partner, equipment,
fine tune everything, get dialed in, go 40-50 miles
around a course, in 20 knot winds - not to mention rebuild a sanctioning body.
Many boats were just not ready yet.

I think it was from the strong wind on his back down the start finish line leg.:) He did have a big lead on them. Or maybe it was the slippery lake water:D

22 Boats in St. Cloud, That dosn't sound bad to me?

Eddie

Fast Shafts 04-05-2004 07:11 AM

Was Great Adventure the 31 Sutphen? If so, why was he running in P5? There use to be a 28' lenght limit. Is there new rules?

Ryan Beckley 04-05-2004 09:51 AM

Great Adventure was a 30 Tempest with twin 300 outboards.

Zyzzyx2123 04-05-2004 10:12 AM

I think they only had 34 boats last year at St Cloud. It's a divisional race. Marathon is the first national race. I think Kitten is right about a lot of boats not ready yet.

F1-00 Racing 04-05-2004 11:20 AM

I think alot of the boat count had to do with the F1,F2 class. Last year there were 11 F boats running. Also 5 Super V that weren't there this year.

Thanks for the explanation Ryan.

I don't think that's St. Cloud's fault. Those classes have pretty much ceased to exist.

At the end of the '03 season, F2 was only a shadow of itself.

Most of the top F1 racers have moved up (Randy etc. to SVL, Mark to cats.) The rest couldn't agree on regs, and they dispersed. No new takers. Sad.

F1-00 Racing 04-05-2004 05:16 PM

Yes it is SAD it was a great class at one time before all the rule changes and equipment changes. Hopefully it will be back again stronger then ever.

True!

And in New Jersey we are lucky to see that many boats ready by June.

If the APBA doesn't have enough participants in a particular class, perhaps they can replace the class with "SOB" Single Outboard Boats?

It is a great entry level class and most of all, affordable.

Latest updates on this class can be found here:
Single Outboard Boat Update Link

As Bob asked:

A 30 footer with twins is allowed in P-5? Is this true?

dhlaw 04-05-2004 06:37 PM

I dont think that you can base the future on St. Cloud turnout. I am signed up for F2 and P3. I know that JKK is F2, Audacity, etc. There are plenty of participants just too early in the year. APBA also has some changes in the future for the class that will make it safer and more affordable.

And by the look of things, I don't think they were dissappointed....

Check out Gdfatha's Pics: St Cloud Pics

And I'll ask again, Is this really a P-5?

Lobsterboy, Billy G? What's that thing running?

LOBSTERBOY 04-06-2004 06:46 AM

Hey Sharkey !

That is a full pleasure boat , Bill called me Saturday morning and asked if i wanted to go to St Cloud ?

Our race boat has a blown engine from testing last week ,so obviously that boat was not ready !

Bill said he was bringing his pleasure boat up and wanted to splash it and watch the race !!!

Well by the time My family and i got to St Cloud there was a number on the side of the boat and i was informed to meet him at the drivers meeting ?!?

Now to answer your question on how fast it is !

All i know is that it's slower than Simply Awesome ! :D ;) :D

BRUCE SEROFF 04-06-2004 12:36 PM

Bill got the flag fair and square. We broke out. Rules are Rules. Doesnt matter if its 4/10mph or 4 mph.

The rule for P-5 size limit is a gray area in the book and is currently being addressed. Thankyou Steve David.

There is a 28 foot limit on P-5. But the wording is a bit confusing regarding Boats over 28 feet which are not capable of 70mph.

I did not mind running with Bill and I believe his boat is not capable of more than 70mph.

I thank him for coming out to play, as the third P-5 competitor had a headache and was unable to race.

Anyway....

Bill, Great to meet you and thanks for the chat . I can learn alot from a true veteran. It was a pleasure.

See you in Miami

It was indeed a pleasure boat.. When we walked on the dock and checked it out it was loaded with sun tan lotion, towels and duct tape...:D :D :D

Plus ..it could only dock north to south...;) :D

SHARKEY-IMAGES 04-06-2004 10:03 PM

Yeah Lobsterboy...

That sounds like Bill...:D :D :D

"Hey Sharkey! You want to go to Key West and win a World Championship?" With 2 weeks to go and the Cheetah Cat wasn't even painted yet....:D

Sure enough, I helped him finish the boat and he won the World Championship!

That man has some history. When is someone going to write a book about him? :eureka:

LOBSTERBOY 04-07-2004 06:58 AM

MR SEROFF

You are a gentleman and a true professional !!!

This is way i am proud to call you a good friend !!!!

As far as i am concerned you won that race ! Yes you broke out, but by only 4/10 of a mile an hour ?!

please let me have the honor to be the first one to buy you a beer in Miami !!

:D

Sincerely

Marc

Hy Bruce,I sent my driver Ken Kasten up there to go to the apba meeting and check out what we will be racing in Marathon. He came back with some photos of P4-13 United Way but didnt know what hull or length it was.Could you help on this,or anyone. MEL Vixen Racing.

BRUCE SEROFF 04-07-2004 07:26 AM

Hi Mel

"United Way" is Bob Chritie's 26 foot Scarab. (Formerly Christie's Photographs). I think it was a Scarab anyway.

Im sure you know who it is now. Good luck in Marathon.

I may try to get down there, but my schedule is getting pretty tight. And all this driving is killing me.

See ya soon

B
