Fall Poker Run

The Fall Poker run also looks like it will be a fun time. We have never been to Grosse Ile so am not sure what to expect. I am assuming we will launch our boat around the Gibralter area. Does anyone know much about the ramps in that area. Also can you leave your trailer overnight. Not being able to leave the trailer overnight is a big pain, I don't know why if you are willing to pay a fee for each day you are there why so many people won't allow it.

Re: Fall Poker Run

There is a huge ramp at the metro park entered down Jefferson south of Gibraltor. I am pretty sure that you can leave your trailer overnight. At least you used to be able to. It is close to Grosse Ile. There is a LEOPA web site also.

The water at Metro was VERY shallow two years ago when we put in for the poker run. I will probably run out of Monroe if I can make it this year.

I always launch at Elizabeth park,it's straight across from Grosse Isle right next to the free bridge( Grosse Isle Parkway) it's 5 bucks per day and you can leave your stuff there overnight.

Thanks, Do you know if the ramp is suitable for a 43' Black Thunder? The ramp can't be to steep or our trailer will bottom out.

Re: Fall Poker Run

I've seen some pretty big stuff down there,I've got a 33' and don't have any problems.I launch and retrieve out of the launching side because there are a lot fishing tournaments out of there and bass boat guys can't seem to figure out what no power loading means.

Your profile says 25' outlaw, so you must have moved up :D
are you a LEOPA member, I am trying to put the names of people I met on the runs with their OSO names if they have them. I know a lot of LEOPA members don't post very often

Hi Donna. Erika and I will do the fall run. The cat will be finished next week the 26th. We plan to spend that weekend in Grand Haven boating. The following weekend we will haul it back for the fall poker run.

Hey Donna,

Just catching up after a looooong weekend on the water. Janet and I are looking forward to seeing everyone next weekend.

I use the Lake Erie Metropark ramp all of the time, it's the only one I'll use aroud here, mostly because no one gives you a rash of crap about power loading. I don't have a choice, and the folks there understand. A lot of other big offshores use this ramp, too.

It's the closest ramp to Ford YC, and is 12 lanes wide, nice big lot, overnights ok. I left my truck and trailer there all 3 days this weekend. Just tell them at the gate you're staying of couple of days. If you have a Metropark sticker, you're all set.

You guys coming in Friday nite? Let me know if you or Ian need anything, this is my back yard.

Who else is coming?

See ya,
Brian

Re: Fall Poker Run

Oh, and when heading out into the channel, wait until you're well into deep water before getting up on plane. On the way out, just keep your eyes behind you to make sure you're in line with the channel markers all the way out. Same thing coming back, idle in lined up with the center of the markers off in the distance.

Re: Fall Poker Run

Thanks for the info Brian, Ian talked to Rocky and he was looking at some charts last evening on what's the best place to put in. I will make sure he reads this thread. We will be there on Friday and might even take a half day so we can get in at a reasonable time. When are you guys heading over? The weather looks like it will still be in the 80's for the weekend :D

Boy did we have a great weekend at Kelly's Island There must have been 30 to 40 club member's boats there between Sat-Mon. The sun shone the whole time and the lake coperated for everyones trip back and forth. We have had great summer, I am not looking forward to it ending :(

Re: Fall Poker Run

Yeah, what a great weekend. I stayed near home with gas prices like they are. I kept the boat in the water at Elba-Mar Boat Club, and just hung out at Crystal Bay and the Sugar Island cut. Both of those places were hoppin'!

I'm planning on a half-day on Friday, too. Let me know when you guys plan on coming down my way. I'm less than 10 mins from Lake Erie Metropark, and I'd be happy to show you guys around.

Rocky's place is right across the canal from the Metropark launch.

See ya,
Brian

Sounds good, I know we plan on eating at the Ford Yacht club on Saturday night. A few people have told me Portafinos is good, I was wondering if we should have an early dinner there on Friday, how far is that from where we will be & is it worth going, if so would you and Janet want to join us. Please PM me your phone numbers, I am assuming we would
be at the ramp around 2 or 3.

Re: Fall Poker Run

Portofino's is a nice place, good food, decent docks (seawall on a canal). It's about 15 mins (including 5 mins no-wake) north of Ford on the Trenton Channel.

2 or 3 sounds about right for me, too. I'll ask Janet about dinner on Friday, I'm guessing she's game. Check your PM for my number.

I will call you later in the week after I talk to Ian. At the moment I can't talk at all I lost my voice over the weekend, and as you can imagine for me this is quite a hardship :D

What's the chance of a slip being available Fri and/or Sat night at Ford YC? Possibly even a room.

Scott,

Dukenrock is a friend of mine. I'm trying to talk him into running with us on his 382 or riding with me. How much would his club dues be? I might pick them up for him if he brings his ride.

And BTW, thanks for covering my back on the other thread. I appreciate it!

I'm trying to talk Fund Razor into coming, too.

Chris

Chris,
I'd be happy to pay any dues if I go. The weather looks great for this weekend! I will see how Rocky's doing this morning and get back to you. Been a bad year for the dogs! :(

When heading out into the channel from Lake Erie Metropark, wait until you're well into deep water before getting up on plane. On the way out, just keep your eyes behind you to make sure you're in line with the channel markers all the way out. Same thing coming back, idle in lined up with the center of the markers off in the distance.

Once in the channel, make a left and look for a couple of markers about 1/2 mile up on the right. Turn right with these to the stbd side, and then look to the left. The big marina on the left is Ford YC. Look for markers to channel entrance.

30 seconds total run time once you get out of the Metropark.

Re: Fall Poker Run

Here's directions to Lake Erie Metropark, and Elizabeth Park launches:

Lake Erie Metropark:
Take I-75 to exit 29A, Gibraltar. Stay on Gibraltar Rd for about 5 miles, past Fort St, over 2 sets of RR tracks, to Jefferson. Turn right on Jefferson, stay there for about 3 miles, past High School on right, around a sweeping bend, and look for entrance to Metropark on left. Follow signs for ramp.

Elizabeth Park:
Take I-75 to West Road exit, don't know number, but something like 32, 33. Only one ramp, but once exited, it splits off. Stay towards Grosse Isle/Woodhaven. (going east)

About 1 mile, at Home Depot corner, turn right onto Allen Rd. Just past RR tracks, you turn left onto Van Horn Rd. Take Van Horn Rd past Fort St, past 2 sets of RR tracks, and turn left onto Jefferson (Van Horn dead-ends there).

Immediately after turning left, stay right for a turn onto Grosse Isle Pkwy. Elizabeth Park ramp entrance is on the left, about 1/4 mile down. Don't miss this entrance, because next you'll be going over the bridge to Grosse Isle, and you'll have a whole different set of problems turning around.

I've done both ramps, and I prefer Lake Erie Metropark to Elizabeth. It's just a much bigger facility, 12 ramps vs 4. Ask Elizabeth park if they have room for your rig and trailer... the parking lot is much smaller.

Hope this helps,
Brian
