Hi Andrew
I guess you could say the heart of the club is in the Monroe/Toledo area. A lot of the members can be found at the Round House at Put In Bay or the Casino at Kelly's Island. The Spring fun poker run usually goes out of Monroe boat club and stays around that area. The Main poker run used to be out of Monroe, last year it moved to Put In Bay and will probably return there this year Fall fun poker run is out of Ford Yacht Club and takes place on the Detroit River to Lake St Clair. There is a trip to Kelly's Island over labor day, and sometimes there are other weekend trips which vary year to year. The seasoner opener party is a pretty good one, it is the first or second weekend of May at Put In Bay, it is called the Tadsen T Party. It is named after one of the founding members who now owns a big yacht, he supplies mass quantities of LI ice teas, the club holds a barbeque at the Crews Nest. Some brave the chilly day and come by their boat but many take the ferry, most stay in hotels. Like most pre planned events, dock space limits the amount of boats, however space is almost never a factor on our runs. Notices are always sent out well in advance and I have not heard of members complaining about not being able to get in a run. However this does not mean that you can wait till the last day either. The club is made up of all types of offshore boats, some are really hot, new, and expensive. However there are more of what I would call the middle of the road offshores. The only problem that I could see is because Lake Erie can be so rough that you might not want to run in all conditions. However I have seen it where members with larger heavier boats have let members with smaller boats ride with them if the waves kicked up. It is a nice group of people that love to have a good time. Don't judge the group by how much activity goes on in this forum, for some reason a lot of the club members are not big on posting on websites. Hope this information helps you a bit, where in MI are you located? Donna |
I also forgot to mention how affordable the events are. For instance the spring and fall poker runs only cost about $50.00 for two. Usually that includes two nights of dockage, lunch, a poker hand, and sometimes even dinner! LEOPA is affiliated with a lot of the yacht and boat clubs in the area so they usually wind up getting dockage for no charge, and drinks at the boat club bars are on the cheap side, so that is a big savings. The club is not for profit, so there is no mark up on events, I often wonder how we are able to get so much value at LEOPA events.

thank you very much for all the information, i would realy like to join your club but i need a few things to work out before spring, we boat on erie all the time lucky for me my wife loves big and rough water, we usally put in at bolles harbor, iv'e been on your web site didn't see a link for joining so i guess i would need to contact one of the members?
thanks andrew |
They don't make it easy do they:( you have to hunt for it. Go to this link which is on the contact page and click on the second boat, it will take you to Scott Smithers email and just let him you know you would like membership info and he will get you set up.
http://www.bolteinsurance.com/leopa/...x_contact.html We used to put in at Bolles, it is so conveient to Monroe Boat Club where we are members. Unfortunately they will not let you keep your trailer there overnight so we have started putting in at Lake Erie Metro Park, they are great about overnight parking. Where in MI do you live. There are a lot of members from Monroe and from downriver so this should be a perfect club for you. Also for the first time this year LEOPA membership will include access to the AYC clubs, good cheap drinks:drink: If you join let me know, and I will help introduce you around, you and your wife will feel at home in no time. That is another good thing about the club, it's mostly couples and the gals are really friendly so it works well for wives as well. Donna |
we don't stay over night to often on the boat, but we were looking for a ramp that would allow over night parking sterling allows it but they don't like it. we live about an hour away from monroe, clinton. thanks for the directions on how to join but if it happens this year it won't be until closer to summer.
