Wolfe Island?

Hey Everyone

We have been boating near our family Cottage on Wolfe Island for nearly 40 years, this year we will have our first "real" performance boat, things sure have changed in that area in the last while, was wondering if anyone else on this board does any boating in that area? [St. Lawrence River]. We are on the South shore, not far from Clayton, NY, and Cape Vincent, NY, would LOVE to hear from fellow boaters who have boated in that area who know of hot spots, fuel docks, restaurants, or just want to chat about the area and/or boating in general. Looking forward to hearing from everyone and would like to extend my best wishes for a safe and Happy Christmas Season!

Hi Michael: My home port is on Wellesly Isl. Hot spots are Lake of the Isls., Picton Isl beach, or Potters beach. And as always A-Bay has something going on . nice to here from others on the big river. PJ

Hello There!!

I beleive you are only about 10 mins or so East of me, we are at the South/East end of Wolfe Island, have taken some day trips to Big Sandy Bay at the Head of Wolfe Island, nice place and occasionally head to Grindstone Island where there is a nice beach, Great to hear from a local neighbour, please stay in touch!

Hey man, I'm down river a good bit, but love to see new places on the river. I'll be up there @ least twice next summer for a week or so per visit. I usually do the Alex Bay poker run in June; in fact we won it in 07' and had a real blast! I would love to get up your way and see that area more. give me a call in june or 1st week in August for the 1000Islands poker run, we can do some boating.
Regards,
Chris

n20michael 12-14-2008 03:42 AM

Hey Chris, THANKS!, be good to do some boating with ya!, the Alex Bay Run sounds like a real blast!, I ended up buying a Baja h2x, nice boat, nothing fancy, looking forward to summer though!

n20, just saw your post. I am on Grindstone Island in the Picton Channel. Can't miss my place Swiftwater point on the chart.

heater63 02-16-2009 06:57 AM

The Islands is an awesome place for boating. You can explore all summer and never see the same place twice.Get yourself a chart though, there are many dangerous areas. If you choose to visit A-bay you better behave,Its swarmed with water cops and they are all trying to justify there existence.

whataride 02-16-2009 08:18 AM

Ths islands

Seems like most other areas have a "power boat club " and they do fun runs etc ....I usually just tour around but organized / gatherings would be fun ............never been out to big sand bay ...is that facing the lake ??

heater63 02-16-2009 08:54 AM

Big Sandy is the nicest beach up there. There used to be the 1000islands powerboat club but I dont know if it still exist.

Is Sandy kid friendly ,can you beach the boat or do you have to anchor ?? We usually go to Grenadier as its kid friendly and easy to raft / walk around .. Potters is a bit of a pain with the east wind coming in off the 40 Acres ..

Any body on the 1000 island power boat club ???

heater63 02-17-2009 04:25 AM

The president of the club was I believe Mark Hodge from Governeur. As far as big sandy, you will have the same wind issues there, you can beach it if not windy.Kid friendly when I was there

n20michael 02-17-2009 12:08 PM

Hey "T Islands"!, great to hear from ya!, Grindstone Island isn't far from me at all!, if you guys are talking about "Big Sandy Bay", its at the head of Wolfe Island, very sandy, and was kid friendly, alot easier to get to by boat, in the summer if you walk in, you have to pay, but, can anchor there for free, nice quiet spot most days, faces the lake, nice view.

If there was a 1000 Islands power boat club, I would glad join up!

Been boating up on the river for over 10 years, mostly weekends.

I live in Ct and drive the 300 miles most weekends because it is worth it.

Dodge Bay is another shallow bay where people are dropping anchor and having a good time.

Mike, I will come looking for you this summer as you are right across the river from me.

That's the truth. I believe we know each other, I worked for your parents a couple years ago, and we have place a couple houses down on on Steele's point.

Man I thought I was the only crazy one driving all the way up there from CT! We are usually anywhere from Kingston to Ogdensburg but home base is the Morristown area. Grenadier Central, Big Sandy, Potters, Canoe Pt are all great places drop anchor. Tim how's everything going?

t-islands 07-05-2009 06:52 AM

The sun finally came out in the Thousand Islands!!!!

n20michael 07-05-2009 07:20 PM

Yeah, Finally! When it wasn't raining it was S0 damn choppy it was a nitemare on the water!

I rolled in late friday and was out for awhile yesterday, went to the foot of Wolfe Island and ran pretty hard on the way back and did a lap of Carlton Island, on the way back I got caught in the wake of a lake freighter and stuffed the bow into a wave crest, swamped the wifey, she wasn't happy! Ha Ha

Last nite we anchored near Millens bay and watched the fireworks, Happy Belated 4th everyone!

I thought it was quite nice out there this afternoon :D.

Was surprised to see all the boat traffic out today, busy day on the river. Good to see, to say the least.

t-islands 07-06-2009 09:13 AM

It was a nice day, had a good time on the river. Caught the fire works over the castle in the bay. Back to overcast with more rain coming.

Ragged I believe I say you by Canoe point.

n20michael 07-06-2009 06:55 PM

Well.... I imagine in a 35ft Fountain the water WAS pretty nice! Sadly, in a 24ft Baja....NOT so much! Ha Ha!

Nothing beats fireworks from water, when I was out Sunday I saw a really nice Blue Cobalt from Wolfe Island going up river, real nice boat

I may be up next weekend or for a few days mid week, I am right across from Millens Bay, just North/West of the red channel marker.

Boat Safe Guys!
Michael

Could be, we ran thru there four or five times on Sunday afternoon. Pretty good crowd in those bays, good spot on a windy day.

dbhammer 07-20-2009 01:24 PM

weather has just sucked this whole summer so far, blows.

n20michael 07-20-2009 03:32 PM

Hey "Hammer"

Your right about weather, it has been awful, when its not raining, its SO windy and rough I haven't been able to do much, I think the weather was nicer 2 months ago then it is now!

Whereabouts are you on the St. Larry?, would LOVE to have a look at that supercat sometime!

Michael

minxguy 07-21-2009 05:58 AM

Michael, I am at my camp and the weather is fantastic since the wind calmed down. Chance of a spot shower this afternoon.

Ken

n20michael 07-21-2009 02:02 PM

Hey Ken!

Well, Of COURSE the weather is nice, its a weekday!!, LOL!!
probably have thunderstorms and 90MPH winds from Friday morning til Sunday nite! Ha Ha

Glad your getting some decent weather, I was up last weekend, and MAN it was chilly!, when it warmed up enough to actually go out [and stopped raining] it was SO windy on the South side of the Island we could hardly make any headway, ended up just anchoring in my bay and swimming with my niece [5 year olds never seem to care how windy, cold, or rainy it is, as long as they can "play in the water"]

Would Like to get up this week or weekend, but, at this point its looking pretty grim, I am DEFINATELY coming up for the August long weekend, and I believe the following weekend is the Poker Run in Kingston, and I never miss that!

Enjoy the week, I hope you get some good weather!

Michael

minxguy 07-21-2009 06:42 PM

It's fixin' to pour.

Ken

n20michael 07-21-2009 06:46 PM
