Calgary, Canada

Looking at some work in Calgary, Canada. Is there any great places to run a 36 Nor Tech?

jimmyjr 12-30-2010 06:24 PM

no not in calgary, but look on the map and find kootenay lake in southeast british columbia, its about 4 hours away but you will think you have gone to boating heaven.the only drawback is the lake is coldbeacause it is glacier fed but some great boating, and a little further into bc there is okanagan lake and the shushwap lakes you would probably be the big dog on most lakes, but i think you maybe suprised at some of the hardware on any of the lakes.i am in regina saskatchewan and have a 21 outboard that runs around 90 and this year on labour day i got spanked twice, both by brand new cats, there is starting to be a lot more perf boats in the area, lots of young guys making well over 150k per year in the oil biz with nothing to do with it.

We delivered a 47 Outerlimits GTX to a customer in Calgary and there is no where close to run the boat. Clagary is not his primary residence but I think usually boats on Shuswap lake which is hours away

its not b.s. its all oilfield work, look into places like estevan sask, kindersley sask, weyburn sask, aberta has slowed some but saskatchewans oil biz is just coming into an upswing.i am in the car biz and i see all the pay stubs and credit apps.just sold a 2010 harley 350 crew cab over 65k to a 22 yr old who works in estevan for a company called presicion drilling,he put 35k down and financed the rest but the 35k was his bonus and his last year t4 was over 130k.but they do work hard and in pretty adverse conditions, but if you want it its out here, you just gotta work for it.

n20michael 12-31-2010 11:21 PM

Who said it was BS???? I am outta work and would like to know where to apply, that was all

Michael

jimmyjr 01-01-2011 11:24 AM

im pretty sure you can apply online but im not sure i do have an appoitment with one of the leadhand guys[he would be in charge of basic hiring]on tuesday and i will provide a link for you.there are quite afew guys from back home [ont]who are making the move.and its just not the oil biz its everything from sales to welding home building, construction, mining[potash][diamonds]etc.aso try looking up saskjobs.ca that website should give you a pretty good idea of what is available,i hope this helps, and orry to hear you are out of work,i work for a gm store, and i know oshawa got hit pretty hard.

jimmyjr 01-01-2011 11:33 AM

sorry,i wasnt trying to imply you didnt belive me,try looking at saskjobs.ca and i think that shoul give you a good idea of what type of work is availble out here.im sorry to hear you are out of work i have a few friends from the oshawa area and i know it got hit pretty hard.if i can help with anymore info or if you want to come check it out we always have a spare room and a spare sled.just let me know

Thanks! I appreciate the offer and hospitality! I would make the move in a "second" pretty hard to have a decent life here when everybody is paying $10/hr if your lucky!

I will look up the link you provided, I come from a skilled trades background, so, hopefully there is something out there. I have tried a few of the "oil sands" job listings, but, they all want you to pay in order to apply, and I just cant do that, LOL!

Thanks for the help, its appreciated!

Michael

jimmyjr 01-01-2011 05:54 PM

hey no problem i will get some links for you on monday, lately it seems welders are in particular demand i know of a pipeline company that has just hired about 20-25 guys from texas to weld i sold acouple of them trucks and they said they are getting paid almost triple what they were getting back home and better benefits.the problem with the american workers is that its not permanent[contract work]so the canadian worker is much more desired.so right now a canadian skilled trade worker is geting paid very well and there is lots of work available.but as we all know there is a downside today its -34c with the windchill more like-40c but the sleds sure like it if they are set up right.also its pretty flat theres an old joke around here,if your dog runs away you can see him for 3-4 days.but good people and hard wokers and they party as hard as they work[just watch any home roughrider game]

Centsless 01-02-2011 01:11 PM

roughneak is one of the hardest jobs in the world.........
and no one has patience enough to extend second chances
and mistakes on a rig can and usualy are fatal to someone......
be sure.......

n20michael 01-02-2011 05:05 PM

Thanks Jimmy! I really appreciate it, DAMN good of you!

"cents" I am 42, been around the block a frw times and NOT afraid of hard work, I know it wont be easy, but, I dont mind, I am used to being "under the gun" at work. I was born with ONE mouth and TWO ears, and I am WELL aware of why (-:

Thanks again Jimmy! Its appreciated!

Michael

jimmyjr 01-02-2011 09:29 PM

hey no problem, its not all roughneck work there are tons of companies that supply the oilfield, and on on and on.i hope that i can help,i also dont want to make any promises that i cant keep.but i feel pretty confident that we can find somthing for you!!!!!i am from ont.myself and have helped more than one friend find work out here.i will check tommorow and post some links.

jimmyjr 01-03-2011 09:10 PM

i talked to a few people today and it looks like the next big hire is going to be end of jan to early feb.one guy i talked to is building four box stores at a strip mall and he needs lots f guys starting @22$per hour for general labours[sp]there is going to be a job fair here in regina in the last week of jan for aprox 50 companies from potash to oilfield work.so in a nutshell it looks good i will update tommorow.sorry no links yet im still waiting for them to be sent to me.

n20michael 01-03-2011 11:58 PM

Thanks Jimmy!

I'm in NO way "expecting" you to gurantee me a job, considering we have never even met, I think its DAMN decent of you to do what you have done already! I DO truly appreciate any help, when you get any information I would be gratefull if you could provide it to me, Things "out here" are still really, really bad, what little "headway" we where making got pretty much CRUSHED by our wonderfull Premier implementing the "HST" and gas prices going through the roof, oh yeah, dont forget the "smart meters" that have caused hydro bills to double and tripple, not a good time to be in Ontario! LOL

Thanks for the Help Jimmy! I will PM you my contact info as well.

Hav a great day!

Michael

jimmyjr 01-06-2011 02:30 PM

h2 i need to know what trades interest you.also you need to know that there are no strip clubs in saskatchewan.im just letting you know in case you were going to bring dollabill w/you.haha

n20michael 01-06-2011 03:09 PM

Hey Jimmy!

No much in the way of "Ballets" out here either, seems to be a dying trade, except in Toronto, and, of course Montreal!

From what I hear, "Dollabill" could have a good time at Knitting competition, LOL!!

I worked mainly in steel fabrication, tons of experience bending, forming, shearing and welding metal. I also did a fair share of fabricating at a race car shop I worked at, and general millwright experience

Anything you can come across and send my way will be appreciated! Thanks again Jimmy!

Michael

Have to agree that the Shuswap is the place to be for us Westerners and HiPo boaters. I have been going (and storing) out there since '03 with my 27' PQ and really enjoy it. The lake is awesome for where it is but unfortunately the recent economy has stalled some of the development/condo projects; around Sicamous anyway. It's not Lake Ontario where I originally boated but it is a good time. If more serious boaters continue going there maybe some marina developments will get back on track too. Looking forward to dumping my cash there this year, running a 38' PQ now, LOL.

jimmyjr 02-13-2011 01:22 AM

need four speed,i think i have seen you in the shushwaps,i was running an older 28 skater, mainly black and orange, kinda a harley theme boat.if it was you you helped me get back to the marina.i still owe you a huge steak dinner.and whatever else you want.you saved my ass,HUGE

Need4SpeedGTCS 02-13-2011 11:50 AM

Hey JimmyJr,

sorry but that wasn't me that helped you out. I haven't had to tow anyone on that lake yet but I'm always willing to lend a hand to a fellow powerboater.
If you do see me this summer say hello...I always have some cold brews and bs to share...

jimmyjr 02-13-2011 10:46 PM

great, will be there canada day for about 10 days when the time gets closer,i will let you know where we will be,and we can maybe have dinner orsomething,i am in edmonton quite a bit for auctions, and car stuff too.
