Lake superior facts

Thought this was pretty interesting....

LAKE SUPERIOR FACTS
Lake Superior contains ten percent of all the fresh
water on the planet Earth.
It covers 82,000 square kilometers or 31,700 square miles.
The average depth is 147 meters or 483 feet.
There have been about 350 shipwrecks recorded in Lake Superior
Lake Superior is, by surface area, the largest lake in the world.

A Jesuit priest in 1668 named it Lac Tracy , but that name
was never officially adopted.
It contains as much water as all the other Great Lakes
combined, plus three extra Lake Erie 's!!
There is a small outflow from the lake at St. Mary's River
(Sault Ste Marie) into Lake Huron , but it takes almost
two centuries for the water to be completely replaced.
There is enough water in Lake Superior to cover all of North and
South America with water one foot deep.
Lake Superior was formed during the last glacial retreat, making it one
of the earth's youngest major features at only about 10,000 years old.
The deepest point in the lake is 405 meters or 1,333 feet.
There are 78 different species of fish that call the big lake home.
The maximum wave ever recorded on Lake Superior was 9.45 meters
or 31 feet high.
If you stretched the shoreline of Lake Superior out to a straight
line, it would be long enough to reach from Duluth to the Bahamas .
Over 300 streams and rivers empty into Lake Superior with the
largest source being the Nipigon River
The average underwater visibility of Lake Superior is about 8 meters
or 27 feet, making it the cleanest and clearest of the Great Lakes .
Underwater visibility in some spots reaches 30 meters.
In the summer, the sun sets more than 35 minutes later on the
western shore of Lake Superior than at its southeastern edge.
Some of the world's oldest rocks, formed about 2.7 billion
years ago, can be found on the Ontario shore of Lake Superior ..
It very rarely freezes over completely, and then usually just for a few hours. Complete freezing occurred in 1962, 1979, 2003 and 2009.

Great information

A few years ago we stayed overnight at the ship wreck museum up at white fish point. Cool place to checkout if you can while up that way.

Lots to see up there. Worth the trip.

I'll be fishing trout for a week at the mouth of the Nipigon River this spring and it's pretty hard to beat. This will be our third trip there and the ancient shoreline is simply spectacular.

Our favorite place to boat. Weather must be just right. Boated Munising in 07 and the water temp was 74 and the air temp was 101 F. The cliffs and dunes are amazing.

Beautiful spot, a former world record speck came out of there. North end of Nipigon is also fantastic country and great fishing.

About 20 years ago I spent a lot of time diving ship wrecks near the Munising area. Was amazed how clear the water is . The "Pictured Rocks" shoreline is beautiful. I would love to get back up there some day.

superior sounds like an incredible lake, I'm gonna make it up there, possible bike cruise up there this summer, if I can talk my girlfriend into riding on back for that long...

PROWRENCH 01-30-2013 05:41 PM

When I was a kid, my grandfather, dad, brother and I boated from Grand Marais to Munising and back in a 16ft starcraft! It was a perfectly calm day I'll never forget.

michigan troll 01-30-2013 05:53 PM

We have been boating SS Marie the last few years. We stay on the river one mile from the locks. Its amazing you can travel thru the locks free of charge in these days. We run up to Whitefish and down to Detour. Its an amazing place with lots to see. Munising is still our fav.

Another thing about Superior is if you're alone and fall in the water far from shore you don't need a life jacket, hypothermia will get you

offshorexcursion 01-31-2013 11:15 PM

Great post thanks for sharing!

Another thing about Lake Superior, it feeds the rest of the great lakes. So a little snow or rain in your local area is not going to make a dent in the low water levels. We need major snow runoff this spring into Lake Superior!

Welcome to correct me if I am wrong.

No problem, is was an Email from a good friend of mine that lives in Acme / Grand traverse.

I sure hope Superior feels like sharing some water with us down here this year!! My local lake is down about 17" from 2011. That limits me to Lake Mi. or Huron only! Really makes it difficult to test & tune when big water is 2 hours away :(

I am East of Toronto, seems like we are getting "some" snow this year, and I hear things "Up North" are pretty good, unlike last year when people where mowing there lawns in January, lol

Water levels last Fall where SCARY low where I boat (St Lawrence) so I am hoping for lots of snow this winter.

Superior is a beautiful lake, the scenery is stunning, the fall colors are something EVERYONE should see at least once.

BUT, you don't want to be ANYWHERE offshore on that lake when the water/weather gets nasty. I have a friend who worked on the Lake boats his whole life, I remember him saying to me "Son, you have NO idea what big water is until you have sailed on Superior"

thirdchildhood 02-02-2013 07:06 AM

That maximum wave height seems questionable. I copied this from a Wisconsin web site: "Maximum Wave Height Recorded: 51 feet near Whitefish Bay".

good reading, thanks for sharing.

A couple perks I've noticed about boating on superior
-Deep water, no need to really watch you depth finder, if your 1/2 mile offshore the only way your running aground.......is because it sticks out of the water......BIG ROCK
-the water is cold enough there is no need for bottom paint. I kept my last boat in seasonally. The scum line I scrubbed offwith a brush. No chems nothing.......and it was still white.

I get to drive along a 5 mile strecth of superior shoreline everyday........The power of that lake some winter mornings is chilling when its storming.

I keep thinking about putting on a poker run based out of the marquette area.......It would definately be a true "Offshore" run if the weather picked up:poopoo:
I've already got a pretty good scenic course layed out, just a matter of getting the right people on board.

We pulled the camper up to munising last spring summer. Camped at the city campground right on the shore, it was fantastic. Had fun exploring the area, especially just west in the bay there by the old furnace. We also rented a pontoon boat and did pictured rocks and viewed one of the shipwrecks. Looked like we were going to hit huge rocks, but they were down there, water clarity confuses you.

Trip out was great, water was painfully cold, but the wind changed and we came back wIth spray breaking over the front. Made me nervous as you are a good distance from hore when cutting over to grand island at one point.

Fun area, all the kids want to go back.

Brian
