Quick PIB Question

I am aware x-mas in July (or the 12 days of X-Mas as they are now calling it) starts this Thursday. I was planning on heading to PIB just for a day trip tomorrow, Wednesday the 16th. I shouldn't have an issue getting a dock or mooring ball for the day, should I? Was planning on being there around 11am. What do you guys think? I guess I could always anchor in front of the monument and take the water taxi......

VoodooRob 07-15-2014 11:52 AM

If it was me I would give it a shot, don't think there would be an issue on Wed.

You should be fine but give the dockmaster a call just in case and get one reserved! couple years ago they had full docks all week/weekend at the end of the month only! goodluck! great time!

s022mag 07-15-2014 05:15 PM

You will be fine. You could go Friday and still get a spot. Last year when we were there, there were available spots everywhere the whole weekend. Next weekend will be the busy one. Worse case scenario you'll have to raft off, just let them know how long you plan on staying so that they can put you somewhere you can get out easy the next day. I'd go to B dock but A and C are re done so they may be worth trying.

Have fun. We are going up the following weekend.

I had a friend tell me A dock is not open. At least it wasn't last weekend....me I read multiple places A dock opened up July 4th weekend...me did they close,it again? Weather looks good so we are going to head there tomorrow.

A dock was 2/3 open the weekend of the 11 and 12

Had no problem getting a spot at B Dock, I am betting the weather kept quite a few people away. While the forecast was for 1-3' waves, it was more like 3-5' w swells larger. Day cleared up and the ride home was much better. Looked like A Dock was completely closed today...

paul235 07-20-2014 08:05 PM

we reserved a dock at Middle bass for the big weekend!

See you up there! Big group of us will be at middle bass. Come say hi! Jriggs, s022mag, bigboat28, sommerfliesby, etc, etc. should be a good weekend. :drink:

ok guys need your help. Our house got trashed this weekend that we put money down on. So they said we cant rent next weekend. Its starting to look like i might have to bust out my boat and use that. Anyone know if i come out friday night, or sat morning if docking will be impossible if i want to either stay the weekend, or just for the day and leave at night. The boat is 38ft same as S022mag

paul235 07-21-2014 08:54 PM

Niceee sounds like a good time! Me and the wife will prob get there around 6 on Friday. All they had left was a 52 foot dock witch is a bit of overkill for our 30 foot boat lol.

Think it's going to be tuff to get a spot at the public docks after Thursday night/Friday morning.....

On another note I am heading back to PIB again this Tuesday (22nd) for another day trip. Looks like the weather will be much nicer than last Wednesday when I was there.... Lake Erie forecast for Tuesday morning is waves 1 foot or less. I have got to see this. I have never seen such a thing in Lake Erie..... I just hope finding a dock for the day won't be too hard..

The entire lake has been very calm.. ive been out on erie with less then 1' for 4 days in a row now (more like 6" at worst).. not common this time of year I dont think.

breakitout 07-22-2014 01:47 AM

A and C were open the long weekend, wonder why they closed them again?

Like I said, I've never been out there in those conditions, so hopefully it stays that way tomorrow. Last Wednesday was supposed to be 1-3 and was more like 3-5 with occasional swells larger.. Which is more what I am used to out on Erie....

C was open last week, however A had construction equipment all over it including a big barge. I have a pic but too tired to deal with posting it tonight. I will let everyone know how the docks look tomorrow when I arrive.

paul235 07-22-2014 07:06 AM

The keys are a private marina just east of the jet express dock. They sometimes have extra room for a offshore as they'll put 3 of us in 1 dock. Mb is middle bass the island on the north side of pib has huge state park marina. Super nice and you get to reserve your dock. Downside is you have to ferry to pib.

Rrice 07-22-2014 08:15 AM

Went over last weekend. little slow there because it was cooler& rained sat. but still a blast with the Captain Morgan girls at the Mist. Moored at the Park place marina they had slips. It was very flat across to the Detroit river. Have fun!

prostock3 07-22-2014 11:11 AM

so it sounds like you can take the trip out there friday and either get a spot or be screwed and have to come back

paul235 07-22-2014 02:59 PM

Put it this way I run the islands almost every weekend and the only time I've not gotten in to pib was when all the docks were closed except b. Be patient and someone will pull ya in. Fill the boat with girls and they'll kick someone out to get ya in lol

Same here, and although I've been slow this year, I've spent almost every other weekend up there in years past, and NEVER not found a spot. Worst case is we got a mooring ball one time, but I actually enjoyed that. Just be patient and toss the hook for a bit if you have to until something opens up.

prostock3 07-23-2014 09:31 AM

so you can anchor out and wait? or do you have to use a mooring ball? This is my second time there and the first time was a few years ago and we have a slip paid for weeks ahead of time. This is last min since our house that we where going to rent got trashed last weekend and unable to rent this weekend for my bash party :(

low_psi 07-23-2014 10:27 AM

All Docks were open when I was there Tuesday. A-Dock looks really nice. Bummer is I blew a lower coming back. Had 6 people on board and lots of gas, which really wouldn't let the other motor do the job it needed to. Called Boat Tow, they grabbed us towed us back (about 4.5hrs) with numerous stops because the tow boat kept sucking up seaweed, then the tow boat was running low on fuel so we went from a cool 9MPH to less than 5 MPH... Then got stuck in a crazy thunderstorm... Had a great day at the island, had a terrible ride home.

Prostock, since Xmas is spread out over 2 weekends it sort of thinned out the crowd. We are staying on middle bass Thursday thru Sunday, I'd call them I believe it middle bass state park they may have so cancelations. You can anchor in the harbor in PIB bay by the monument but if you do bring 2 anchors case the wind shifts on you. The water taxi will pick you up but they only run til midnight I believe same as if you were on the mooring balls. You can also call crews nest they might be able to reserve a spot but that's $$$ worth a shot though.

My gf wants to stay on PIB. If you can for sure get there by Friday I would be willing to go over and hold a spot for you but I don't want to get rafter in we are staying with a bunch of people at MB and want to stay there the rest of the weekend.

For what it's worth the only time I couldn't get a spot was when there was a sailboat regatta in taking up a whole dock.
