PIB Labor Day Weekend

A question for all of you PIB regulars.... We were thinking of heading to PIB for an overnighter Labor Day Weekend. Ideally we would like to arrive Saturday morning and leave Sunday morning. Alternatively we might be able to arrange a Friday morning arrival if necessary. Probably would have 2-3 boats that we would love to keep together, but not necessarily a deal breaker.

So my question is, how busy has Labor Day weekend been in the past? What are the chances of getting a dock on Saturday morning?

I went Labor Day weekend 2012. Last minute decision. We arrived around midnight Friday, rafted off. I was the second boat from the wall --- all wall space had already been taken. By noon Saturday, the marina was full 4 wide.

I went this weekend. It was jammed. The new docks are great.

It has been crazy busy this year. Docks were full this past weekend by 4 pm Friday. I didn't even get a spot...

I would plan on Friday AM if you want a good change of getting a spot.

Since the docks were all F'd on Memorial Day weekend you can count on Labor Day being packed. Definitely no later the Friday AM arrival for a spot. We are probably going to go Thursday early Fridays are tough for us to get off.

s022mag 08-22-2014 11:56 AM

So who all is going. We are shooting for Thursday evening.

Planning to hit the last Pat Dailey show even if we take a ferry over

frickstyle 08-26-2014 06:40 AM

I was calling around for a house rental, but too little too late, all booked up. Anyone know of vacancies on the island???

low_psi 08-26-2014 09:08 AM

We were originally going to shoot for Friday morning at PIB. Well that isn't going to happen due to a few work schedules. To show up Saturday morning at find a spot at the docks would be a crap shoot.. So was maybe thinking Kelly's Island. I have never been to Kelly's... SO can you guys enlighten me? What are some things to do on Kelly's? Would I be able to find a slip or two for an overnight stay on Saturday? Thanks again.

315duramax 08-26-2014 12:45 PM

Sorry for ignorance what is PIB?

Full Force 08-26-2014 12:54 PM

Put in bay, our islands are best place on Lake Erie

brower.22 08-26-2014 12:55 PM

PIB= Put in Bay. It is the little harbor town on the north side of south bass island in the western basin of Lake Erie.

low_psi- you may find a spot Saturday with the extra capacity that A and C can take. Feel free to shoot me a text any time and I can fill you in on the dock space. 419-345-6889. Kellys is a larger island with some okay bars but not nearly the night life as PIB. It is refered to more as a family island. West Bay Inn and the Casino are the main two bars. I cannot help you with dockage questions as I don't go there often. I know that LEOPA is having a get together there this weekend.

low_psi 08-27-2014 09:37 AM

Looks like my plans have changed and the Friday morning trip to PIB is back on. Plan is to splash the boat around 9am, which should but me at the docks by 10am (providing Erie plays nice)......

FuelinAround 08-27-2014 09:35 PM

We will be there on land for a bachelor party!

phragle 08-27-2014 11:18 PM

I will be at kellys thurs and friday with dave, possibly come back to kellys sat after work.

DucBoy 08-28-2014 05:08 PM

If you can't get it at PIB, try the new state marina on Middle Bass and take the passenger ferry over to PIB. I've not had to do it as I have seniority at Crews Nest but I've been told it's not a bad way to go.

low_psi 08-28-2014 10:32 PM

We are all set. A showtime83 is making the trip with us on his concept tomorrow. Meh placed a call to the dock master at b-dock and they have a group leaving tomorrow morning and that spot is being saved for us. I prefer a slower pace crowd anyway so I expect Friday to be a fairly calm thin crowd during the day and the bars to pick up a bit, but not be as crazy as they will be Saturday and Sunday. Plus looks like Friday will be the best weather as well. Boats fueled up and we are packed. Splashing at 9:00 am. Should he there about 10ish.

low_psi 08-29-2014 07:24 PM

Erie was one pissed off b I t c h this morning. It was brutal until middle sister.. But we made it, on b-Dock by noon. I pm lovin our Concept!

Just got home had great weather and seas were flat going both ways. Island wasn't very busy and there was lots of dock space. Great day!

I had a great time, and I didn't even fall into the drink this year!

low_psi 09-02-2014 10:46 AM

Hey Artie,

I was there on Friday, saw your Boat but since we were only at the dock for a small period we didn't see you... I was looking for an IV bag (of wine) hanging off your swim platform....... I do like your new boat. We were rafted up right in front of the line with the Fountain Express and the Red Scarab. We were third boat on our raft with the Blue and Green LEDs (if you made it down the docks Friday night).

Had a good time on the island. Here is a panorama of the spectra on the end of C1. Nice meeting you Artie! Next time i'd like to check out your boat. It was pretty rough leaving the island. We actually stopped at kellys for gas and lunch, wasn't sure if I would see you there.

Shortly after leaving kellys my port motor overheated. We were right outside of Sandusky bay and limped into battery park. I have a transient there for the week. With that high wind and on a single engine docking was a pain. Planning to head back this week with a new impellor/pump and hopefully will be able to drive it back by the weekend. I shut it down as soon as I saw the gauge rising so I don't anticipate any damage. No water was getting to the thermostat housing so I suspect something got stuck in the hoses. Luckily my folks live close so my dad was able to pick us up and drive us home to Cleveland. Expensive weekend! haha

frickstyle 09-02-2014 12:54 PM

When was the last time you changed your impeller? It could have disintegrated and you sucked the rubber up into the hose. Happened to me once trying to dock at PIB a couple years ago. Brand new to me boat, and I couldn't understand why the alarms were going off, I thought the boat was on fire. Mass confusion, and also difficult to dock with one engine and no power steering.

brower.22 09-02-2014 01:08 PM

I made the mistake of not changing or checking them when I got the boat a few months ago. Previous owner stated that they were done last year so I had hoped that they would last the summer and I planned on changing over winter. The engines are tucked in pretty tight so the water pump is very hard to get too. Will be changing port now (and hopefully fixing the problem) and starboard when I get it back to my marina. If it is chewed up then I am hoping that the transmission cooler is holding the rubber debris. Ill keep you all posted.

Bummer! Hopefully you can find all the pieces and get if flushed out. We were going to stop at Kelleys, but decided to hook up with some friends at cleats in east harbor instead.

ARTIE..How the hell did I miss you? I was there with my new project Cig and another Cig rafted off down the dock on C from friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon and then headed to KI for the day on Sunday!!

brower.22 09-10-2014 07:34 AM

Finally got the spectra back to Cleveland yesterday.
Turns out after all the work I did last week (impeller, thermostat, exhaust elbow gaskets) it ended up being some junk stuck in the thru-hull fitting. Luckily no damage done to the motor (compression readings and oil pressure all good). Drove it back solo yesterday from Sandusky bay. Thankfully I will be able to get another month (and 1/2) of play time out of it.

DYV- I saw you guys on C. Nice boats! Didn't see but heard you leaving on Sunday haha.
