1000 islands

Planning a trip this summer, what are the things/places not to miss?

jeff32 12-11-2014 08:33 PM

kingston! sandbanksnot too far and much more!

82predictor 12-11-2014 09:05 PM

Where are you going to stay? I would assume you are bringing the boat? Like Jeff said Kingston is great! Big Sandy beach is also nice with not a lot of people. If you are looking for a larger scene, Potter's beach is usually very busy if the weather is decent. Any ideas on dates? There are a few big weekends up there.

BigDawgChallenge 12-12-2014 10:25 AM

Yes, we are going to trail up and put in at Keewaydin state park. We would stay on the boat. We were planning 1 or 2 nights at Clayton and Alex Bay, but we need more to do. Was thinking about a week and a half to two. We would have a 7 year old with us. Is there enough to keep us busy that long?

Possibly the month of august.

82predictor 12-12-2014 09:08 PM

Do not have anything to drink if boating from Keewaydin or anywhere near A-bay. You will be pulled over for noise check and safety check near there just because of the type of boat you have. Singer castle on dark island is very cool and Boldt Castle is impressive as well but a tourist trap now.

Pirates week is a huge deal in A-bay at the beginning of August and the Kingston PRA event is usually the same weekend. There is all sorts of stuff to do pirates week and a huge party the first saturday in lake of the isles but the party is not super kid friendly. Jeff is right about Kingston. That is a beautiful city with stuff always going on. We also went to Brockville a few times which was another nice city in Canada to visit. There is a ton to do up there. What size is your Donzi? If it is bigger there are places to go in the lake as well.

Thanks so much. Im really looking forward to it.

Its a 38.

Ive been a local on the river for my whole life. BEST thing to do would be to run with 82predictor or myself and show you around the area. the river is a BEAUTIFUL area. but vance is correct on the drinking part... i got boned this summer for having open containers. they have become SUPER strict in the past few years.

some places to check out

-Cape Vincent (check dates for the french fest) awesome time for children..
- Potters beach is a fun time depending on the weather and weekend.
-singer castle is great for children. I still enjoy going there.
-The Snugg harbor bar is a hole in the wall just past cape vincent in the lake. AWESOME food.

If your looking to stay for over a week, i think your going to find yourself dealing with a very bored child... the bay is trashy IMO. not a place to really hang out... especially on a big weekend. but with being there for so long you can really go on a nice boat trip.

once i get the shop built this spring we want to plan a poker run for a shop warming event. Date depending though!

Awesome to see you looking to make a trip out! We need to bring back the powerboating community to the area!

Phil, we would love to cruise with you. Although i don't remember much, my parents used to take me there a lot as a kid. Their best friend was the care taker for the Boldt family boat house if i remember right. I do remember seeing the castle in its run down state, a picnic on a island state park, and hitting my head on every floor joist under their cabin as i ran from finding a snake under it. Funny what we remember.

well feel free to send me a message anytime! always more fun with multiple boats. Best thing to do is check dates for what fits your application best with a family. most of the time any weekends will be fine. The Week will be deserted until thursday on the water, But there are some crazy weekends like any boating area. lots of great food though and obviously you know the area and its beauty.

BigDawgChallenge 08-04-2015 02:52 PM

We will be there august 8th-16th or 17th of this year (2015) if anyone is around.......

Vanharca 08-11-2015 07:43 PM

I'm going to be up there this weekend, probably only on the boat the 14th. How has everything been with the authorities? Anything you would recommend?

BigDawgChallenge 08-12-2015 07:13 AM

No issues so far. But, mainly been in canada the past 5 days. Going to clayton next, the antique boat museum is always good, and boldt castle. Going to go to rock island light house and singer castle also..

A couple years ago I had heard of a thrift/notical store on one of the islands, any one know anything about it?

Vanharca 08-12-2015 07:25 AM

Have you made it to lake of the isles? Looking at the charts it seems a bit iffy getting in there, but it sounds like fun if you do.

Lake of the isles isn't bad from the east. If you come in from the north through the rift it is really neat but a little tricky. There is room for 1 boat at a time and the water moves fast. There is a long no wake zone to idle through too.

Vanharca 08-18-2015 06:17 AM

So I made it through the weekend without any issues and had a great time. We made it to Lake of the Isles from the east as mentioned, but I am curious as to what the big draw is there. We got to the cove where everyone hangs out, but it looked like it was pretty deep and lots of weeds. Did I just not make it in far enough? Is there sand in there if you go in closer to shore?

We ended up going to Clayton for lunch and then heading to Potters Beach which was great. I think I saw you there 82Predictor, you've got Mean Streak right? I drive past and admire your boat on the way to and from work every day.

Lake of the isles is good for warm water and a huge party the first weekend of pirates week. The cove is deep and weedy and I don't know of any beach there. We hang out at potters most the time because the beach is nice and for the most part it is more family friendly. Big sandy is also nice out in the lake at the head of wolf island but it is in Canada and people at the park try to charge you if you walk on the beach.

Yes, we have Mean Streak. We were there Saturday late and then way too late in A-bay that night! Spent Sunday there too with the kids! Everyone knows where I live now, I need to build a barn. :p

Were you tied up to the 34 power quest? What color is your boat? Are you doing the sodus run this weekend?

We didn't get to Potters until later Saturday, probably around 4:00 or so and only stayed for about an hour. Our boat is mostly white with black/dark teal/dark magenta-ish graphics on the sides. We anchored on the north side near where the PowerPlay was if you saw him. We will definitely by doing the Sodus run this weekend. We'll be at the point Friday night, put the boat in first thing Saturday and we've got a slip at Sodus Marina Saturday night.
