Early Bird?
Wondering if you guys think the ice will be gone by the time April hits. Anyone know what the current thickness is.

I was at the lake house in vermilion last week and it was still all ice as fair as u can see. And even seen 5 snowmobiles ripping past the house heading west. I plan on going this year so I hope its all gone by then

Was talking to a guy at work yesterday that has been ice fishing up there, he said out by west sister they have drilled through 29 inches of ice. He said it was at the limits of their auger.

Wow that's thick. I have a hard time getting the boat out when it's this cold. It would be nice to get a week of sunny warm weather to get it ready. We manage to go out the last weekend of the season but never the first.

I can't find the chart, but one I saw the other day showed that although there's almost as much ice cover as last year, it's not nearly as thick. Here's hoping that means it'll melt faster this year!

We went last year by boat, had a blast. It was just nice to be able to get out and do something.

I can't find the thickness chart, but here is the overall ice cover link. The thickness chart has to be in there somewhere... http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/data/ice/ |
Looks like the mean thickness is about 10 cm more this year on Lake Erie as of current conditions. Huron is about 10cm greater this year as well. Superior looks like it is down 2cm in thickness. Ontario is up 2cm roughly. Over all ice coverage looks like it is down slightly from this time last year but ice thickness is up.

I won't chance it on a hard freeze winter, even if it seems melted there is so much crap floating still, and there can be ice under you dont see... I may take BOB if I am not bust that Sat...

I have a place in southern Michigan (Three Rivers) Inland lake -- Ice is a GOOD 18" think - everyone is still ice fishing and there was a least 3 ft of snow in most places.
Don't think it will thaw much before JULY!!!! 3pointstar |
