Just a heads up for the Canucks on this board in case anyone is planning to import a US made boat to Canada this summer. You may want to do it within the next two weeks because it looks like the retaliatory 10% surtax will apply to all boats (sail and power) effective July 1st.
Details are on the Dept of Finance website.

Applies to used boats as well. I asked CBSA and thats what they told me. So I went to my MP and asked there. Word came back from Ottawa, all boats, new or used are subject to the 10% tariff. BS really as if its on used purchases, then its just a revenue tool for the Feds..
My mind is racing now, so say you buy a used boat and trailer combo for $20k usd (which is $26-27 k Cdn Funds. But you have the seller do up the bill of sale for boat at $5000 and trailer at $15000 (($20K total) and then show up at the border and claim the boat at $5K usd ($6500-$7000 cdn funds) and pay the 10% tariff on that ($65-70)
I'm not willing to try, maybe somebody else will go first but it would be legal IMHO. The tariff is for boats, not the trailer they sit on.

It's worth a try, last time I imported a used Item from the US (snowmobile engine) the customs official checked the web site ad to verify my receipt.

Boats with inboard or I/O engines are hit the worst because customs deems them to be a single entity and the value of the engines remains subject to the 10% surtax along with the rest of the boat. Outboard engines are classified separately from the hull so you can get a break from the surtax on that type of boat. Trailers are always classified separately from the boat. Hopefully this will all go away in the near future.

Seems to me, the Canada citizens need to make the complaint to their own Government about charging their residents an extra 10% to purchase an item. The tariffs were put in place in the US to put pressure on them for a fair trade negotiation. I do believe our tariffs have been for the most part released the trade limits were the biggest part of the agreements based on volume of sales.

There's nothing in the trade agreement that suggest we charge anything extra for import of boats That is a Canadian thing. It is only hurting the Canadian people. The low volume of sales to above the boarder really does nothing in the big picture to the US. It only hurts the people of Canada. It is Canada's way of making the wealthy pay for the lower income residents. Boats are toys, it is not a necessity so they tax it for other programs.

Trudeau is not helping the people of Canada...Just another example of socialism and how it works.

This has reduced the inventory of used boats in Canada and increased the advertised price of Cdn based boats.

Still a good deal for American buyers with the lessor value of the Cdn $
