Re: i'm new to hustler

i belelive there was aslight change in the hull ...other then that the boat is pretty much the same.

Re: i'm new to hustler

I have a 99 Slingshot.
No issues with the hull quality at all.
It is holding up nicely.
Feel free to give me a call if you want to ask questions.
I think they starting making the Slingshot about 97. Not positive but that should be close.

I have a 99 also. There's no structural problems with my boat. It doesn't have the head room of a sonic but overall its a good size cabin for the size of the boat. By the way mines for sale in the classifieds. It's the one with the custom graphics.

Re: i'm new to hustler

It looks like Dean is correct. I found a hard copy of some info off the Hustler web site in 2000. It says that they introduced the Slingshot at the Miami boat show in February, 1997. In 1999, it was Powerboats Powerboat of the Year. My 1998 Slingshot has 350 hours on it and is holding up just fine.

They must of up dated to 500efi on that boat...I would not want the first year of a new model hull.Evem at 2006 they still need to redo the hull so it good above 100 :(

Re: i'm new to hustler

it was updated. it was originally an hp(carb)500 boat. it was stripped prior to being listed as a repo in 2001 w/out power, drives, etc. in really rough shape. Now its done and relisted. Kind of high IMO.

Re: i'm new to hustler

i agree. They need to make it break 100 w/ 525's. i doubt it will ever happen though. Joe doesnt seem to have the ambition that paul did.

Woh.......There is no way in hell a 388 is goiong to go a 100mph with a full cabin and every thing else. The Only reason that Outerlimts 39 is runnning that fast is because it is an epoxy boat which takes like 2000 pounds out of the boat. As is a 388 with 525's with Xr's is running 92mph. I challenge any manufacture with any boat similar size and weight to get a stock boat running that fast! Joe doesnt Need Hustler to make a Living he does it as a Hobby and thats hy you get the quality boats you do...with out spending 500k for a 39 foot boat.

And as far as the boat not running good over a 100mph...the 388 was origionaly built to go 80 85 mph. Now a SlingShot with bigger power gets a slightly changed hull so it will run better at high speeds. And again Joe owns Hustler as a Hobby hes not in it for a money maker.....he could do a kilo reacord if he wanted to but why waste the time and effort when it will be a never ending Battle!

i beleve the above boat held the record for a long time even thought Fountain was claiming it. the Hustler is a fast boat, but they are a number of 38s that will leave it with 525s.i was hoping for a face lift for the 388.

I heard 143mph.But also heard they went into the water twice . JC and Zul dynoed the motors .I believe it was around 1100hp

For 2000 they changed the front interiors from the pleated style to the smooth style vinyl. Also in the 1997-98 they had a few dash's that came loose . I believe Chip told me they changed the way they attached the dash to the hull in late 99.I think it was fasteners?

Joe told me on the new 388's coming out the lay up at the rear strake that people usually cut out.they lay the foam coring down then the stringeron top of it .Because when ya cut the strake out you go into the stringer. People claim this to help it above 100.I have heard they cut around 18-24 inched out. I would assume this would hurt your speed at anything below 95MPH.less lift.

Also 03 they went to the new design Mcloed cockpit interior

here is a 98 and a 2001 to show the diff

Are you experiencing too much lift in the stern?

yes ,Which the 388 rides nose down anyway. It just started porpoising around 100 and you can hear the props cavitating alittle in between hops. Its acts like a bass boat up on the pad. With the drive at 1 or even at 0 it still does it . Also chine walking in flat water.Tabs at 0

I need to ck the toe , also need to try turning them in . and also ran out of prop!!

I still have 200 more hp on just a pulley change . But :(

Re: i'm new to hustler

I just got off the phone w/ him. his old 388, whippled 500's, boxes, bravos, porpoised bad also around 98-100... didnt chine walk at all though.. I know w/ his 32, to keep it steady over 100, he had to run a good amount of tab and positive trim, just like Paul told him to.. same w/ a fast 26. i would thinnk spinning the props in w/ give you more stern lift and more chine walk....

he said hustler filled the stringers in, inside the bilge, of black cloud to allow for grinding of the strakes on the outside w/out going through the bottom.

what are you running for motors/power again??

I was told the opposite .They said Turning them in gives bow lift?

Its a whipple 500efi I built Dynoed at 759 hp at 7 1/4 boost and at 10psi it made at 6100rpm 850 and 909 TQ .

Thanks for the info.

You're probably right.. i was tryiong to make an educated guess.. i would thinking spinning them in would create a centralized downward thrust between the two props lifting the stern, but, im by far no expert...

wow.. that's good power. his whippled 500efi's that came from hustler made 740hp i believe.

Just talked to my bud, spinning in = more stern lift and more chine walking. he tried it also.. what kind of props are you running? full ear? cleavers?
