Question on my drives

What are the differences between the Mercury Bravo One XR drive and the Bravo One XR Sport Master?

customryder 04-07-2008 02:00 PM

sportmaster is the lower part of the outdrive.. being pointed at the front tip. & usually 2" shorter.... regular xr is painted black with no point.

bbaur32 04-07-2008 02:11 PM

Are they the same on the inside gears, strength etc.

Strip Poker 388 04-14-2008 01:18 PM

not 100% but I think the guts are the same, maybe someone will chime in

1 Has anyone converted from standard bravo to sportmaster? 2 Did you see any performance increase?

Thanks Steve

Yes,Racerx6 put some sportmaster foots on the standard Bravo uppers.35 Fountain single step, with 415mpis,He said it slowed it down 3-4mph.I think he was thinking that it wouldn't be that bad, also he liked the looks of them, Ive heard that the skeg is what hurts it.Last I heard he was selling them.

If your wanting a better foot buy a Imco case.

On mine I had the standard bravo foot ,then went with the BMax lower, I didn't see any difference,Everybody told me that the bravo blunt nose hurts ya at a 100+

I called merc racing and found out that the guts are the same. As far as speed I don't Know because this is my first 388 hustler. But @ Utah Lake 4500 elevation, half tank of gas, two adults it gps @ 84 mph. Lake Mead 1400 elevation half tank of gas, three adults, two kids gps @ 86 mph. Still running same props 32" bravo 4 blades that came on the boat from Ohio. Going to Lake Havasu in 3 weeks so will see how it runs @ 450 elevation close to sea level.

Thats some good #'s . Whats your max rpm?

bbaur32 04-15-2008 01:04 PM

Running 5200 rpm at Lake Mead and 5000rpm at Utah Lake. Both days were about 60 degrees, but as it gets warmer I will lose more rpms due to the heat. Why were talking where did you get you fuel pump mounts that are on the lower front of your motors. Did you buy them or make them? Starting the homework process for getting ready to install my whipples. Need all the help and advice I can get. Thanks for all your help so far you even helped me get the right anchor just by reading your inputs.

We might have to put Rob on the payroll. We appreciate your help Rob. When do you want to come out to the factory and take a ride on the rockit Rob? Let me know and I will get everything set up for you. You should come out and hang out with Joe for a day at least.

John

Rob still wondering about those brackets you used for the fuel pumps on the front of your motors. Are they custom or can I buy those somewhere.

They are the stock 500efi fuel pump/fuel cooler bracket, I just trimmed it up made it smaller cleaner looking,You can actually step on it.The front of my oil pan has 2 bosses that it bolts to.It isn't below the oil pan when transporting it on a cradle.

You have 525's???

bbaur32 04-17-2008 05:12 PM

Raceday500 are you the same John @ hustler that is helping me get the painted plate made for the dash on my 388? If so did you get my templet I overnighted to you yesterday? Need to make a small change if possible. Thanks Brett

I would think that boat will run 90?

I would lab the props to get 5400 you will need it in the heat..

bbaur32 04-17-2008 06:02 PM

Soon as I put my whipples on I will get the right size props and have them labbed. Thanks for the Input

just some friendly advice here........with whipples those XR drives will not hold up if you plan on running a lot of poker runs at WOT. Mine are the Teague Platinum XR's rated up to 900 hp and after running just a handful of poker runs I finally wasted one at the PRA season opener in Ste. Pete several weeks ago.....only @ 30 hrs. on fresh rebuilds of those drives. Don't get me wrong.....everything is going to break sooner or later but I would have thought I would have got a ton more hours out of these. I'm getting ready to tear into the other drive to see if it is showing any signs of wear also.....maybe it was just a fluke but I've come to learn that nothing replaces a #6 on those long runs between poker runs stops when running hard......I used to think it was overkill to see #6's mated to 525's....now I see the logic behind that setup.

Not trying to discourage the whipples.......they're awesome......just treat those XR's with respect:D

bad idea imo.. the drives or hull is not set up for that. resale will suffer also.. just keep it stock, you will be happier in the end.
