388 hustler
I have been looking at some 388, what speeds to see with the hp 500 and the 525 ?
Also did they change hull design of boats from 99 to the 2004 ? |
388 hustler
I have 98 hustler 388 with trips 525sc garaged kept runs over 100 $75,000. John Murry 985 969 0363

1999-2001-500efi's 80-85mph
2002-2005 525 prob little better, 2002-2003 they started putting the ITS and sportmasters, also change the cockpit interior bottom is the same For above 100mph,they changed the stringer in the rear were ya could cut some strake out, I think 2005? also reinforced the front stringer around that year also. Goodluck shopping Rob |
I have a 02 with 500efi's, runs all day here 82-83 (900 ft elevation) as high as 85 (mostly at the coast) Like Rob said ITS with xr's, Interior change in 02

Thanks for the info

Riverboater,
The 388 Slingshot has not had any changes on the bottom since it's introduction in 1997. In 2006, the rear lifting strakes were filled and in 2008 all the strakes were filled on the bottom of the boat. The 388 Reloaded from 2013 and up have a different bottom with technology from the 39 Rockit. Hope that helps you out! Paul VP of Marketing and Sales Hustler Powerboats |
80+ is impressive for stock 500's in a 388. How do they with wipples on them?

500efi whipple at 7pds +99mph. 8.5pds 102 and 105 on stock 30p bravos,98-99 on a full load hot day

Hey SP 388 - Pretty impressive speed at 101. Was that the top and what rpm? Doesn't look like you held it there that long. Also, I just bought a 2000 388 with 500efi's. Looking for more outta mine and was wondering if you could tell me what else, beside the whipples you've done to your motors. Thanks!

101 is around 5800-5900 bravo one 4 blade stock prop,w/ 1.30 gear,Prop slip is way up there, ive hit 102 a few times on light fuel, turn props in ran 105 6000rpm,just be careful above 95,here is a thread on my engine build up, it should give you most info ya need or hollar with any questions,Also if your buying Whipple,Mark at precision marine has the maps and can dyno you combination
I just bought a set of Herring 5 blade 28s,not sure if im going to be able to turn 6000rpm with these, ill try when it gets cooler and low on fuel before i put it up for the winter at 765hp w/ 28p 4b bravo one props it ran 99 at 5900 at 848hp w/ 32p 4b bravo one props ran 102 5700 on a good day other wise props seemed to big 2010 rebuild on ethanol it made 883hp at 6000 last rebuild and new design whipples the boost jumped to 9-10 from 8.4. I had to buy new pulleys to slow it back down.it sure felt strong at that boost!! ,but would need race gas to run at that boost. Also i would say anything above 750hp you will have out drive problems. Hope this helps Rob http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...-build-up.html http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...tq-839-hp.html http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...hours-bad.html |

I read a lot from the 45 pages and need to go back and read more, but did not see an answer to how one asked you about getting water to your inner cooler. Is it transom pickup or 2nd stage pump? Anyways, I am thinking of doing a winter project with mine similiar to what you have undertaken. Great Job Rob! - Thanks again Gary |
I took a Teague tube style and redesigned /shortened it, I have a cad drawing, I tried to get teague to make me one shorter because alot of hulls need the shorter version, after i made mine I think they started makeing them, that would be the cheaper route.
at first I was going to put 2 pickup one for each innercooler, i even had bought 2 from teague and them bought a kit not put together, I ended up changing the j tube to a sharper raduis ,theirs a tread i did on hydrodynamics/fluids, trying to find out if the tighter radius would hurt flow, i ended up making it anyway, Then Dustin Whipple said that use the one pickup going into one strainer then coming out of the strainer with 2 # 12 ,that it would have plenty of flow, I was worried about having to hand it deep in the water, hearing all the stories of them slowing boat down a good bit, I couldn't tell any diff but never did any back to back test, its shooting water out the side pretty far and its hanging down about 1/2 ,ill have to measure make sure, if you do your if you can cut a tunnel in the bottom so you can recess the pick up more, also on a myco trailer the bunk would hit the pick up, i had to mod the trailer some, on my other style pickup i felt it didnt have enough water going thru the innercoolers, but it never hurt anything , but it was good insurance. another buddy was doing his hustler at the same time and did use the longer pickup, but he laid it more sideways and hes is running alot faster than mine, sorry for jumping around above, never really couldn't tell a story in the right order, lol ill did up some picks what ll in did with the pick ups, |

I tried cutting the bottom for the pick up to inset, the hull is thin, maybe .100 thick, then it goes into the green foam coring, I didnt have the ability to make it look good or neither anybody else around here could,. first pick is the cp sea strainer, if i did it over i would try their larger one,2nd pick is my pickup
3rd pick is my buddys,i call it the long version, but at that time teauge called it their short, you can see the angle across center, remember i was doing mine i was predicting that if one wasent enough i could ad the 2nd pickup on the star side, but didnt need it i got did up old computer for the detailed info/picks the speedmaster boat has to have pickups, diff pick i just thru in |

So do you have a pressure gauge in the dash or are you using a visual to see that water is flowing through the coolers?

it was a temporary thing,to see if there was any pressure at the inlet of innercooler I guess it was free flowing, it never showed any pressure at the gauge,Dustin said it should show some pressure, but he said it must be getting enough and it hasent hurt it self, also the inlet air temp are pretty good when up and running, they get high when idling with no water running thru it, I think Mark changed the high temp idle part so it wouldn't go into rich mode.Jason tried it on his hustler and didn't see any pressure either. I tested it in the sea strainer and didnt get any pressure, I never got into real deep on testing different gauges and lines, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCZJl...UQI0qnjFD8nflg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKwsZ...8nflg&index=28 this i believe is the old water pick up vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsRhQ...UQI0qnjFD8nflg this is before the gopro http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofQZU...8nflg&index=44 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8AyT...8nflg&index=46 |
Good info Rob! Really neat that you documented so much of your project. A lot to think about for my winter project. (Drive reliability is key here) My boat ran a little shy of 80mph, 3/4 full of fuel and 5 people 2 weeks ago when I had it out. : ( The motors just seem to fall off after 5100. From what I read about the intake, it is the choke point. I was wondering if you have tried a 1.5 drive ratio and think if it would be more efficient than a 1.36? I've read that "A boat will run faster with a higher numerical drive ratio. In that, the faster a prop rotates the more power it takes just to turn it in the water. A slower turning prop with more pitch is more efficient than a faster turning prop with less pitch." What's your thoughts/experience on this? Also, what year is your hull and how does your boat behave at 85 -101mph? Thanks for the input.

Joe said that stock power its is faster with the 1.5. i think he said with the 1.36 they rad 28's, stock 500efis was 5275rpm at 85-86 claimed by hustler ,before i bought mine test drove one with 500efis and it ran 85 , low fuel and cool water, mine came with the 1.30,it was ordered to put blowers on it,bmax 1.30 at 5300 was 83-84 , computer reprogrammed, They said at the 1.30 gear might run out of prop, i remember bblade and merc said that the 30 pt was the best inbetween prop, that bigger 34-36's were not a efficient, I dont like luging a motor down , i dont mind buzzing it,the dyno sheets around 5700 it was only gaining 5hp per 100rpm,prop guys say prop 1000 above peek tq, but its pretty flat 38--4800, I guess its kinda like when Fountian was kicking ass coming out of the turns prms up,out pulling everybody, was able to turn more rpm down th e straight with some computer hiding, winning the prop slip on my boat has always been high, the 30's were on the boat 13 years, many hours, never even nicked anything but im sure the blades are straighten out , if you plan on staying na ,ask around ,Linnie did it that and had driveablity problems, mark ar precision marine might have th combo worked out better now, back when i was hangine with richie Zull he di a max out effort 599eftm he pulled out all the race tricksmade around 698hpm but its ahotrod |

Curious to see if you pickup MPH with those props. Another boat here in Clearwater FL has Herring 32's it with 1.5 B max's. |
