Upgrades doing to your Hustler?????

What upgrades are you all doing this winter to you boat?? I'm changing from bravo1's to either merc 6's or wiesmanns. stepping the power form 650 to 1000 each, adding air and a gen redoing the cabin and adding some deck hatches with a new stereo setup. Also finishing the shower out and taking the carpet out of the cockpit area sides and glassing to match in white.

Hard On -
Which Hustler are you running? What kind of speeds are you getting. I have a 38 w/750's, XR's w/IMCO lowers. I'm thinking about changing drives to B-Max. Sounds like you are really stepping up this winter.

I have a 1995 40' poker run eddition. was powered by cobra 650hp and turning imco modified bravos with the tripps was clipping 117 on radar gun in the gulf up the manatee river. If you are looking for a set of B-Max's I can get a number to a guy that has a used pair for sale.

HUSTLEthis 02-03-2004 08:51 PM

We did the switch this last year. We have a 388, had 500efi w/prochargers...in March/April sold those and put in 1000+hp Pfaff's. We had B-max drives and another friend wanted those, so we sold those and did the drive switch in July/August. We found a good deal on #6's so we went that way. Pat makes a great drive too, in fact he is the one who rebuilt our 6's. I know, dumb time of year to do it, but the wife wouldn't let me unless we had the old stuff sold. Turned out great. Our boat is in the Dec/Jan issue of Family/Performance Boating...The pic's were taken when we still had the B-max's on. With the big motors Shannon likes the shifting alot better with the trannys...

Has anybody tried the imco/sportmaster lowers on a 388. If so, was there any increase in speed with a -1 or -2 lower? Got 572s pushing 750 hp, looking to get the best speed out of the boat. Going to give it a test run once the weather gets better in the midwest.

388Hustler 02-04-2004 08:12 AM

Hard On - Yes, I would be interested in speaking with your friend. Let us know how much speed you pick up with the upgrades. Man, 117 is already pretty fast.

Tom - What speeds are you seeing with that power? I have been debating which route to take next (repower or step up to larger hull)

Slowride - I'm getting about 110 on gps out of mine. (IMCO -1) You should be close to the same I would imagine.

Dean

JPD Motorsports 02-04-2004 09:53 AM

Slowride- sorry ahvent tried the imco shortys

Shanntom- sounds like a nice package there.

388hustler-you got a pm! Yea 117 is pretty fast but in the hustlers it nothing. At that speed in some 3-4's the ride is so calm I know the hull can handle more from it. Also doing it to prove a few points aobut some other brands at a couple of poker runs:eek:

388Hustler 02-04-2004 10:05 AM

Hard On - Thanks I got the PM. I'll give him a call. I'm trying to decide what to do. I may just try to upgrade to bigger gears in my existing drives. If you don't mind, let me know how much speed you p/u. I would love to see your Hustler at 130+.

Any idea how much speed my 38 could handle? I can run 110 without any issues at all. I'd like to add more as long I knew I wouldn't have any problems. How much does your 40 weigh?

Dean

SLOWRIDE-388 02-04-2004 11:44 AM

388hustler, you have another pm...

388Hustler 02-04-2004 12:15 PM

Slowride - I just PMed you my number. Give me a shout if you want to discuss.

Later,
Dean

GLENNS 02-04-2004 12:45 PM

Hey guys great thread!!!! Im very interested in all the imput you have. Currently running a Slingshot w/500efis
but am taking the trip to the Miami show to shop for some new power and drives. Was thinking about 675-750 per side and figuring I would see 105-108mph. Any suggestions on motors or drives? Thanks, Glenn

388Hustler 02-04-2004 01:11 PM

Glenn,
See post #2. I'm always worried about my drives. I had a failure with one last summer. I'm not sure exactly if it was the drive or the driver... I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade drives or try my luck. Talk to the folks in Miami and let me know what they have to say please. I can't make it this year. The wife is expecting and probably shouldn't miss it...

thanks Dean, i will give you a call

388Hustler 02-04-2004 02:21 PM

Nice chatting with you guys. There aren't many Hustlers here in KY...

388HUSTLER, We were in the teens with the standard length B-max drives with the new power. After a couple trips out we started to pit the lower unit gears (friends at Phaff's said it was because of the torque), so that's when we went for the change...we didn't want to play the drive game. The #6 drives were mounted as high as we could..the nose is 1 1/2" above the bottom. We tried 4 different sets of props before we ordered our own...just picked them up last Thursday...Going to Havasu this weekend, hopefully the lake will be up...otherwise we'll have to bring it home and play in the little pond over here on the left coast...
Not too many Hustlers out here either.

388hustler: As for the speed of your boat man I don't know what it could handle i would call Chip Fendt at Hustler and ask him. Did see a 388 outfited with trips forsale that had to run good. My boats a pig tips the scales now at 12,500. were shooting for the 130+ mark hopefully we can reach it!!

GLENNS: I have a sweet pair of 702" motors here that we are gonna dyno that will be for sale after the dyno session. can get ya a price if you would like? running pump gas. Can also get some customs together. Will also have my cobra 650's after getting fresh forsale as well, just have to get the cold to leave for a day to take out. these will be well below sticker of any of the power packages that you will see out there and fresh. will get a price also if you would like.

Shanntom: Me so jelous you going to play. make a run for me.

Also not that many Hustlers here either

There is a guy in Alabama that has a 98-99 388 with 750hp motors with the Imco shorties Its been on here for sale a couple times. He said they would blow out easily. So it sounds like it's to high. When I bought mine Hustler said the drive height was at max. and also the Extortion boxes do not help. But with the new design props 5 blade this might not be a prob. With the drive up any higher might give a handling prob in the turns. With a step bottom they already want to skip around the turns

But they new 388's with the ITS is the same as a short extension box .

I would thing the # 6 drives would be the same on the extension ???

388Hustler 02-05-2004 09:27 AM

I have 1" Imco shorties on mine and don't have any problems blowing out. It actually hooks up better than most boats my size.

GLENNS 02-05-2004 01:23 PM

Tom I saw the article on your boat in family/performance awesome machine! I had my search narrowed down to a couple builders for new motors and Pfaff is one of the three. Would love to have his motors, just not sure I can afford him yet! :D

Hard On - sounds like your going to need new couzies,
you know the kind with suction cups on the bottom :p
Dont know if my checkbook is big enough for the 702 motors but am open to any ideas. Who builds your motors for you? talk to ya later Glenn

JPD Motorsports 02-05-2004 04:23 PM

Glenns: My power is built here local, and can drop ship to your door for ya. He's been building custom marine pkgs for a while and never really advertised them so we bought in and decided to make a run with the power pkgs and custom transmissions along with built outdrives. If you like can get all the specs and dyno results for ya on any combo were building now.

Now for the couzies thats another situation:p

Hard On - I'd love to talk some time...117 with triple 650's...not sure how you get there. What props, drives, drive ratio, and rotations were you running? Could help me out greatly getting mine dialed in (see the other thread). If you saw that with your set-up, looks like I ought to be expecting a lot more out of mine :D

I hear ya 'bout showin' some other folks what's up at the poker runs...one of the main reasons I bought my hustler is that they are not that popular of a boat. Had mine for 10 years and still love it!

JPD Motorsports 02-16-2004 04:53 PM

Grand-illusion i posted the goodies on the other thread before I read this one:rolleyes: What year is your boat? mines a 1995. As for showing the other folks, yep hustlers are rare to see around, and all those other ego boats need a good butt whipping to put them into reality:D :D :D

i got a 2002 21' Hustler.....now that is extremely rare...it was the one that was featured at the boat show 2 years ago i think...it currently has a 6.2L with a whipple charger on it. It is currently pumpin out 500 hp and about 84 mph, we are rebuilding to get a little more HP and some more speed...the boat is a riot. Also Chip is gonna help me out this winter on getting some bucket seats similiar to the ones in the old 21 skater....Hustler dominates all other brands if they like it or not
