OK...edgimacate me...:lolhit:...whats the advantage of ilmors over merc????
|

no blowers, lighter weight, better drive/tranny than NXT. Basically same speed from everything I've seen within 1-2 mph. "Should" have higher quality CMI's, but not positive (non-merc spec'd)

Jupiter Sunsation will chime in and tell you about his run from Miami to KW this year. Has not been a real back-to-back accurate test between hulls to verify speeds. |
Lightyears ahead of Mercury in the customer service aspect!!
|
I'm assuming they are reliable as well??? any of you running the indy drive too????
|
Do a search in the GD area using "Ilmor". You'll find a lot.

The 625 is no longer made by Ilmor, although they have some leftovers. Their only two current engines (Generation IV) are the 650 and 725. I'm a happy camper with my 725/Indy.
I don't see Mercury publishing many comparison tests of the two company's competing products in the future. I would love to see the results of tests from a neutral source, though. |

Me too. That article is a bit fuzzy.
The Ilmor isn't as tall as the Merc so for those that have tight spaces. No need for a scoop on the rear deck. The last comparison I saw on Merc's website had them pretty much even steven.... |

What upgrades, (if any) can done to the 550? I take it that Ilmor isn't making the 550 anymore either, correct?
Thanks, Dean |

Thanks, Dean the 550 is not produced anymore. The older 550 can be upgraded to the 625 with a valvetrain swap and ecu re-cal. We will still do new gen 3s with warranty's in 570, 625, 7-10 configs. if anyone wants the original screamers! |

No blower- same or slightly more HP
No belt dust all over your bilge <better top end rush less midrange and low end> more compact- a tad longer but not as tall All aluminum Better mileage great service and support (this is all about your "guy" though) better drive- (less parasitic loss) Factory CMI's Far fewer computer issues than the merc 700 Lifespan is incredible with little to no maintenance, and some guys reporting hours at 600+ with nothing more than fluid changes. What kind of cost is there to adding the indy drive to a 710 package vrs adding a Merc 6 to the same package.

Looking at the Racers Packages that ILMOR was offering, about $31,000. With less parasitic drag and less weight, the Indy should be a little bit faster than the #6. Don't know about Merc pricing...

UD,
Thanks for the info. Dean I was quite skeptical as to why bother finding a replacement to a BBC and thought for a long time the Ilmor was an answer to a question not worth asking. I was wrong. Its a very worthy mill thats quite different from whats out there now, and I couldn't be more pleased with my choice after 2 seasons of ownership. Although not as hip as the new gen 4 725, the gen3 710 isn't far off and it never fails to delight even my most hardcore buddies, and scare my passengers with a push of the stick. It also delights me at the gas pump routinely getting around 2.5 MPG on long ocean voyages. This gives my smallish boat a decent range on a 100 gallon tank. Ive taken multiple 300 mile round trips and this thing just purrs. Idles like a kitten around the docks and howls like a raped ape roaring right in between a BBC and a Lambo - it has to be heard to be believed. Uncle Dave |

Uncle Dave Great pics, I recognize Avalon Harbor/water taxi in the 1 pic. That is great MPG you are getting, amazing! I'm trying to remember what drive you are running on Lavey? Thanks, Dean |

Thanks, Dean Im running a Teague platinum/BRavo XR Mileage- pretty incredible IMHO. It makes runs like Del Rey to avalon a cheaper affair than an Imax 3d movie. (really) Chicks ride for free (of course) and sausages buy drinks and gas- or better yet bring their own rides - To be fair I don't rail it too hard in the ocean with passengers I typically run 35-60 out to the ithsmus then when Im in the protected water "Burst" up to about 80-85 for 3-5 mile stretches then calm it down a bit. I havent had a single person regardless of experience or ownership tell me the mill doesn't deliver. A buddy on the run to Avalon he would stick it up to about 45-50 then push it forward and laugh maniacally over and over repeating "holy-$hit" everytime the mill cracked into the top half of the tach.
