does the insurance premium vary greatly from a high performance boat to a equal value equal size none performance boat such as boyrider or cruiser

yes. So does the availability of coverage. At least from my experience.

Tip - (I got screwed on this) - if you are considering insurance costs, as you should be, don't just call your provider (allstate, statefarm, etcc..) and get a quote over the phone and assume that is your out of pocket expense. Make sure oyu have definitive coverage from someone who understands the boat.

The reason I say this is this: I was budgeting and called statefarm and got a quote of 79 bucks a month for coverage. I was ecstatic. Bought the boat, got it home, used it for 3 weeks and got the phone call that it had gotten to the underwriter and they had refused it and my coverage was being cancelled. I had to go somewhere else and it was over twice that amount.

Just a tip.

That is a good tip. State Farm & Allstate are good companies buty they are not in the High Performance market. Some boats get through but you are taking a huge gamble.

I had BoatUS for 10 years with express cruisers. Switched to a "go-fast" and felt lucky to get a rate 2.5 times what I paid on the cruiser for a boat valued nearly the same as the cruiser. (BoatUS wouldn't touch a boat considered a "performance boat" even with my clean/perfect history with them)
