Who is everyone using for insurance on Long Island NY. I am looking to insure an OL and have not had much luck.I have already contacted total dollar and wake zone...Thanks

Unfortunately, the problem is that you are in a county that has historically high theft rates. So I know our carriers like American Modern and American Reliable will decline if the boat is stored in Nassau County any part of the year. I would call David at Elton Porter (Markel). Those are really the only options.

If you can keep it outside Nassau county, then we could take you to both American Modern and American Reliable. I think we already chatted through email about this but if you decide to keep the boat outside because of insurance issues, let me know and we'll get you rates.

Recent changes, your policy was grandfathered into the program. Any new policies are subject to this rule.

Stacy, this does not seem right ,nassau county has some of the richest people in this country and the crime rate is not that bad. There are not many stolen boats in nassau so I dont know where you are getting your crime rate stats from . I know first hand I have been in law enforcement over 20 yrs in nassau county and been in the marine business over 12yrs in nassau county. This area is in no way a great risk..

Allow me to elaborate on my previous post. The carriers such as American Relialbe and American Modern only "Opt out" of insuring in areas when they have historically high loss ratios. American Reliable used to insure in Nassau County, until they got hit hard with a combination of the following losses:

1. Theft of boats
2. Theft of boat parts (i.e. outdrives)
3. On water losses from damaged boats

The combination of the three was why they say that they pulled out of the area.

My information comes straight from the underwriters that underwrite the program. I do not pull crime statistics. I only enforce the guidelines set by the carriers and they make their determinations based on their historic loss ratios.

While I realize that this area might have some of the richest people, that doesn't matter to the carriers. All they care about is their loss ratio and if they are losing money in an area. They just won't write there any longer. I realize that this does not make their decision right but it is their choice to choose to offer policies in one area or another.

So, I apologize that in my previous post I did not elaborate more but that is the information that I have from the carrier. Again, I don't make the rules, I just have to follow them. What they base their decision on is not anything I can control or fight against.

Who knows... maybe they will be back in Nassau County in the future... time will tell.

So, for those of you with a boat moored in Nassau County that are insured with American Modern or American Reliable....do not let your policy lapse or cancel. If it does lapse or cancel, you will not be offered reinstatement. Make sure you're up on your insurance payments at all times...

Stacy, number 3 makes the most sense out of all of them . I do know first hand that people in this area want to put everything through there insurance. These people dont realize that they ruin it for all of us. But, this is the first I have ever heard of a problem insuring in nassau county.
