Umbrella Policy Info

Ok, so its obviously time to get one. Between business, vehicles, and toys insurance is getting a little crazy. I'm concerned with the limits placed on regular policys even when maxed that I'm a lawsuit target waiting to happen.

Without getting into personal details, there are obviously a number of people much more wealthy than I who are on OSO and have been through this before.

Is anyone willing to offer a little insight, from one hard working guy to another, who doesn't want some lawsuit happy low life destroying years of hard work?

Self insured options? Go for the large umbrella as the best option?

Working my ass off 80 hours a week and not wanting it to be all for nothing one day.

Humbly hoping the anonymity of this site allows me to ask this without coming off like an azzhole... but where do you go to ask questions like this? Not going to trust some insurance agent's answers thats for sure.

Any thoughts from those who may have been in this situation before?

Umbrella policy's are a good idea for anyone that owns there house and has vehicles and very reasonably priced usually less than 200 dollars a year for a 1 million dollar liability policy. It's good price of mind for little coin

I have mine through State Farm. I'm very happy with the policy and it's design, including the coverage and the way it's leveraged across all of my other policies.

Basically, you need to have minimum liability requirements across all of your "toys". I can't speak on how the business liability works.

Let's say you have a $520K liability claim against you in a car wreck, (you caused a truck load of new Mercedes to turn over) and your max liability payout on the car policy is $300K. That $300K payout is your "deductible" for your Personal Liability Umbrella Policy to kick in and cover the other $220K. This is easy to align if you have all of your policies under one agent/company, but it get's a little sticky when you have them spread out.

I have high limits on all my polices and an umbrella. But the umbrella excludes the boat, they would not touch it.

now that interesting, we have been thinking about getting one also since we have a pool that all the neighborhood kids come over and swim when have have parties and now that we have a boat Im in works of getting pricing since we take friends and their children out, but haven't heard one exclude a boat. The more I think about it the more i think about a kid doing a back flip when no one is looking and behold they bust their head open so on so forth!!!!!

All State wouldn't renew my Umbrella policy because my wife had a over 16mph speeding ticket in the great hick town of Tiffton Ga. and I had a claim from a uninsured driver that rear ended me @ a red light. WTF? Needless to say they no longer have my business anymore. I am amazed more people don't have them, they really aren't that much money.

Same here
I have 500k on all vehicles and still couldn't get umbrella to cover boats

But still worth having umbrella
500k doesn't go far, trust me I learned the hard way

Appreciate all the info guys. Adding everything up between personal and business I'm paying around $18k / year in insurance right now. And can still see gaping holes and situations where I could get royally screwed pretty easily based on max coverage limits.

BBK has the business, Progressive has the motorcycles, the boat is with some other company Stacey from Wakezone hooked me up with. She is awesome by the way.

Nationwide has the house, and multiple cars / trucks. My Nationwide agent is a retard, and I've already switched agents once within Natonwide for the same reason. I'm guessing that might be the best direction for an umbrella since the house and cars are with them. At that point I'll try and get the boat and bikes covered under the umbrella too.

Does anyone have a competent Nationwide agent they could refer me too? As in one with a brain who actually returns calls and emails?

Talk to Stacy about it as well. If she doesn't rep a PLUP carrier, I'm sure she has advice to lend.
