Stopped by the shop yesterday to drop off my 20.8 to get the engine pulled for a refresh and look at what was there.

A beeeuttifull.... Dustin Whipple 1000HP Big block.

And a brand new 2750 bottom gelcoated in the mold....

I hear its getting an SCX, but Ill let the guy cutting the checks take over the thread from here.

Congratulations- we're all envious my friend!

Uncle Dave

lavey jr 02-08-2010 12:00 AM

The gel looks real trick on this boat!!
This is gunna be one hell of a 2750! I can't wait till its done.

2750

Thanks for the pictures, Dave. This project is going to back up my retirement 2 years, but its worth it. Jeff and Chris are laying up the boat now with carbon fiber/kevlar. According to Chris, its a new experience. The stuff takes special shears to cut it.

This will be a midcuddy bowrider, SCX upper, 2" SC shortie lower. I'm not going to get too exotic on the interior and stereo. I will come out to Corona when the hull and deck are together to pick out some accessories and colors.

My hope is to have a 105mph+ boat that I can keep for a while. The "newboatevery2years is over". I pray. I will keep you posted. Best regards, Quent

Is that motor the reworked 800 teague? That was one hell of a deal if it is.

Quent 02-13-2010 12:20 PM

Yes. The motor is a reworked Teague 800. As far as I know for sure,Dustin used the crank, rods, and block from the 800. The cam, pistons, valves, springs are new. He did some port work on the Brodix heads and used his cam grind. There are several new billet brackets, big tube exhaust and other stuff. I haven't got a build sheet from him yet.

Dustin built this for Mike Pyle and Mike had to go anothe direction so I bought the engine. I'll get more details and post later. Quent

hmmmm yummmmmmmy milllllllll............

lavey jr 02-14-2010 12:30 AM

This boat is coming out sweeeeeet!!! The carbon/Kevlar looks really good and is going to save quite a bit of weight. The bottom laminate is close to being finished and the deck isn't to far behind.
I'll try and post some pics up if you would like me to Quent.....?

Quent 02-14-2010 05:48 PM

Jr., pictures are always appreciated. Thank you. Quent

A few of the deck.
This boat is going to be a mid-cabin cuddy open bow so the center of the deck has less laminate because it will be cut out and no sense in using material that will be cut out and thrown away...

The stringers are in and laminated down with carbon/kevlar and is ready to have the tank put in. The deck is done and once the tank goes in the bottom, the two molds will be joined and the seem will be laminted from the inside and bulkheads will be put in. Once that is done, the hull will be popped out.
I'll try and get more pics tomarrow.

Quent 02-21-2010 07:27 AM

Stringers are down and most of the bulkheads are also in and laminated with the Kevlar.

I don't think I would want to sit in the open bow of this boat!:grinser010: Thing's gonna be crazy!

Quent,

That should be an awesome ride. I think you'll see your 105 and then some. Mine GPS'd a tick under 100 at Elsinore and I do not have the engine or the light lay-up that you have.
Your's should be awesome.
Best of luck to you,

Tom

Here are some more shots of the bottom.
The stringers are laminated and some bulkheads are in and others are being mocked up along with the firewall and floor...

I went to Lavey over the weekend and picked out my upholstery package, stereo, and the rest of the stuff. The deck is on the hull and I could not be more excited. Jeff and Chris took time to come on Saturday afternoon to help with the process and I am most appreciative of that. Here are some pictures. Its getting closer. Quent

Motor

1 Attachment(s)
Mike, the motor is, if you really like this stuff, heart stopping. It has all the right components to be reliable and I am using $1000 of extra gauges to moniter this thing. My plan is to spin it at 6200 WOT so I need to be careful to see just what is happening. A 509ci BBC in a light boat needs to turn up a little.

With the SCX drive, for my first time with good hp, I am somewhat confident that I can enjoy really using the rig without broken drives.
Time will tell. I will keep you posted and, by the way, thanks for working on Dustin to get an accurate build sheet. Best regards, Quent

lavey5150 03-23-2010 06:22 PM

Very nice looking build- wish I had that motor:drink:

Quent 03-27-2010 02:52 PM

My rig is coming along sloooooooow. Its taken 2 1/2 weeks to get the windshield and rails done. I don't know if the wind shield is finished yet. Lavey has done everything they can do but the outside vendors are just creeping. Minimum staff to keep the doors open.

So I just have to be patient. Is that a word? Quent

Uncle Dave 03-27-2010 07:35 PM

Been there buddy!

I fidgeted so bad I wore out a pair of jeans waiting for stuff to come.

Are you going with the thinned out rails?

Hi Quent,
I heard about your latest project. It is a beautiful boat, as is the motor. I hope you get it done in time for the TRR.
We will be over as usual with the rest of Nashville Gang :drink:.
I am looking forward to seeing you and the new Lavey.
Best Regards,
Steve

What happenned to this project?

It should be done by now let's see some photos and GPS speed numbers.

Anyone know the deal on this boat it would be interesting to hear what it tops out at with over 1000HP single.

KAP

Quent 07-04-2010 06:34 PM

Kap, the boat is very close to being finished. Jeff and Chris have gone far beyond my expectations. I am leaving for Europe next week for 2 weeks and expect the boat will be waiting for me here in Tennessee when I return.

Interesting side note, the engine is currently set up for 91 octane. There were 2 dyno runs, one on 91 and one on 93. The 93 run yielded 1023 hp at 6400 rpms. The 91 run yielded 967hp at 6400, 881 ft pounds of torque at 4200rpms. At 6200 rpms the 91 octane run yielded 951hp. As I spoke with Dustin and discussed the fact that we have 93 ethanol fuel available routinely, we looked at the current state of the quality of available fuel and decided to leave the tune for 91.

I will not run the boat at 6400 rpms even though the parts and build are spot on. My thinking is that 6200rpms and 951 hp will be adequate for my use. I can always retune to 93. I just want to err on the side of engine longevity. It will cost me 4 or 5 mph but I want the reliability factor.

A 2750 with a Teague 800 runs about 100. With another 150 hp I hope to run 105 or a little better in hot weather with 3 people.
Time will tell and I have been disappointed before in the world of speculative speed. The gps will take away all speculation.

I will post pictures and speeds toward the end of the month. Thanks for your interest. Quent

Comment:

Well my motor makes the most HP/Torque at 6200RPM and then drops off dramatically. So I completely understand your mindset. In addition, you need to break in your motor for at least 25 hours before you go hammering on it.

Plus, right now even the early A.M. is super hot ie...80+ degrees not the best time to hit it for WOT runs. I agree with leaving the tune at 91 octane right now and just let everything seat and settle in until it gets cooler.

As for top end runs I would not have two other people in the boat when doing WOT top end runs. Plus, I imagine you still need to figure out what prop it is going to like for different tasks.

It is a gorgeous boat and I love the gel the Lavey boys know how to spray a boat. If possible can you post some pictures of the helm, engine, drive, and interior now is the time to bask in your new build glory:drink:.

KAP

P.S. As for fuel nothing better than fresh 110 VP leaded gas I don't care who you talk to...it is the best stuff for your motor. Plus it smells like victory:cool-smiley-011:.

Hello everybody,

Quents "monster" 2750 is near completion!
All the stereo equiptment came in yesterday which consists of Hertz speakers/sub and Audison amps. Speakers are the HCX130 (8), 12" sub HX380 (1). The amp for the sub is the LRx 1.1k and the amp for the speakers is the LRx 4.1k
Sorry I was unable to get pics of all the stereo quiptment....

The motor and drive are all bloted in and ready to go.
So begining of next week we will be putting the stereo in then we can mount all the interior and once the trailer comes in she will be ready to hit the water.
We are hoping to test it mid next week...

Here are some pics...

We are planning on running it on Tuesday...
Stay tuned! :drink:

lavey jr 07-28-2010 03:23 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok we ran the boa this morning at Elsinore....

This thing is one fast boat!!!!
It gets on plane with ease and accelerates like nobodies business!

Due to the small size of the lake we didn't have near enough room to hold it open and let it fly. Also because the engine is brand new and all that we didn't want to push it to hard...

With that being said, our prop for the run was a 33 pitch maxximus with the diffuser cut off. We got right at 100mph (98-99mph) at 5700rpm and it is still pulling hard! At that rpm, the engine sounds like it is just cruising.
The engines redline is at 6400rpm and it is planned to run at 6200rpm at top speed so that means we still have 500 more rpm to go. If we had more lake and some clean water, we could have gotten some higher numbers.

Once it's all said and done, we feel that 105mph is easily obtainable.
The customer is going to be working with Hydromotive to test out some 5 blades, possibly 6 blades...
