Magic Scepter 28' Speeds?

What could one to see for handling and speed in these with 600+HP? What water are they capable of?

DirtyJerz 01-07-2012 08:35 PM

I have had my MCOB up to 103 gps with too small of a prop. There was 3 people on board and completely full tanks. Now since I have gotten a bigger prop it will most likely be in the 115mph range!

Oh and at 100+ it felt very stable! The only problem that I have so far is since there is no windsheild, u feel every bit of wind and regular sunglasses just dont do the job :drink:

Btw, blown 540 @ 4psi

Baja_man 01-07-2012 08:48 PM

What kind of HP are you running? The more I think about the MCOB design the more I like and useful I think it would be for me. 103 might be more than I desire...85-90 more my style IF it is stable at speeds. Compared to V-hull what are they getting for ins. on these?

DirtyJerz 01-08-2012 10:54 PM

Im probably in the 800hp range. Very stable around the 80-90mph range. Obviously MCOB is going to be a little slower than the closed bow, but it is much more condusive to the type of boating we do.

Insurance can be a very finicky thing lol. It was about twice as much for me compared to my 27' V-bottom.

So with 650 HP could one expect to see 90mph with labbed prop? How do these hulls react or like IMCO shortened lowers or extension boxes?

Is there any thing to cover or block wind from traveling thru the mid cabin?

DirtyJerz 01-14-2012 10:59 PM

I would imagine so, but I am not sure. They did offer the cabin doors (depending on what layout u got) that would block the wind, but I have the layout that is open on the port side in front of the co-pilot chair.

From what I have heard, the boat does not react as well as u might think with the shortened lower (but then again, I have no first hand experience). I have a XR, but am thinking of either beefing up the enitre XR internals or going to a standard length Imco.

U might direct some the questions to the General Forum, since this forum is pretty dead and really has no traffic from what I can see!

Should run 80mph @ 5200 rpm with a 26p

With 496 HO power?

I see your from Clio. I live in Flushing, where do you do your boating?

jh88 01-16-2012 05:07 PM

Torch Lake, 496 HO spins a 24p, 66 mph. There was a guy in Flushing with two Magics.

Baja_man 01-16-2012 06:34 PM

I'd like to get a ride on one of those. Mine stays on Higgins with an occasional trip to Lk St Clair or north.

Generally it will take 700hp to get a Scepter to fly at 90mph, given conditions/load. The later model Scepters with double steps are more efficient than the single step versions.

The magic deckboats take more to get there. By way of example, generally about 900hp to get to triple digits, given conditions/load.

Hope that helps.

Sorry, Don't know yet.
Motor is going in as I post.
Then I have to wait until water turns liquid again.LOL.
I am hoping to have it ready in April to prop test.

Oh ok, good luck with it!!!

My buddy John at Eastside Offshore and I built a 1310 hp monster motor for a 2010 twin step MCOB 28 Scepter...It did a best of 133mph with a SCX drive...Spinning a 34 pitch bravo through 1.34 gears at 6200 rpm.

Handles great!

But having no winshield...and having very short free-board...it was like sitting at a computer desk at 130+ mph....kinda windy.

The owner now runs a 28 Maximus prop...which accelerates like a bat outa hell...and still does over 115.

Very, very True!!!! Has anyone tried those movable wind deflectors? I meant to ask some of the Magic owners when I was at Desert Storm, but didnt get a chance to. At speeds over 90mph, the sunglasses just dont seem to cut it.
