Big Magnums....where are they???
 

I was thinking of High Life today as we had to postpone our Around Long Island race. Mike had a 35 foot Magnum that he loved...as he loved all Magnums.

I had a 38 footer that Don built, just like his own 38 that was powered with gas engines. He had a dark blue and silver one and mine was an all white one with gas engines too. The stern would sit high at rest because the lines of the boat were drawn for the heavier diesels.

Simple boats that ran very well. I just had the special Italian ports on the sides and just two on each and not four like the standard production boats had. Great boat and flew very well too!!

I love the 35s and 38s...a bit "beamy" for my lake though. A guy has a 38 around here and I'm not sure how he makes it through some of the channels...

A lot of 35 feet plus Magnums are in Italy nowadays.

At one time they were also built there , with wide beams and diesels perfect fast offshore daycruisers to take a lot of fine people out.
Can't go much wrong there...it's a Mediterreinian thing and Don got the hang of it...

I am not so sure they where build there. The inteiors and engines of 35 and 38 used to be done and this is how in fact Teodoli started importing Magnums. But what is sure is that Italians made some imitations and these in the end finished with a huge following.
I will name a few;
Tornado
the Tornado 38 is very much an imitation and similar as you can get to the Mag from the looks to hull shape. They where cheaper to buy, and run powered by diesels stern drivers, and lighter built. May be it is in these that Don had something to do with.
Itama
The Itama 38 was acutally born as an upside down Magnum, and this is also reflected in its name of the builder which is Amati for surname. This is a bit different to a Magnum at the hull has less deadrise of 22 degrees, as the hull was later modified a bit with the help of an important consultant, apparently Sonny Levi. But no official word for this. Some will say this is better built to a Magnum 38 same sea kindliness and better finished. Take your pick.
