1972 Sportfisherman 35'

I am looking at a '72 35' S/F model, that will need a complete restoration. She has 8.2 Detroits in her, and they will need majored. Aside of that, I can do the rest of the work, myself. Any takes on what these are like, when done? She would be used in the Puget Sound, in Washington. Like I said, I'm looking, and haven't purchased her.

You can't go wrong in my opinion...a true classic.

Thanks, 24 Degrees -

I don't see much about the 35' S/F models. There must not have been big production numbers on them. The ones I see for sale are pretty pricey, with the cheapest one at about $13,000, and some going well over 100K. If I pick this one up, I will be taking/posting progress photos, as I go along. I'm figuring 1 1/2 - 2 years for the restoration process.
It looks like most posts, here, are on the hot-rod models. I am not as much interested in speed, as I am about how she behaves in rough water, comfort, and reliability.

Should be rock solid in rough water...very well made. If you do the resto right, the value will be there.

I look forward to pics...

-----I spent many summers bill fishing off of a 1969 35 sport fish Magnum that belonged to a neighbor. Allmost all of it in the deep water east of Cape Cod or south of Nantucket. The 35 is an awesome wave crusher. The one you are asking about should be even better than the one I was on due to the extra weight of the diesels. My neighbors was powered with twin 427 Holman-Moody FE Fords. Check all the stringers just as you would a smaller boat, especially the ones the engines are mounted to. You should love the boat done.......Bill S

We had a 38 from '76 to '81.
The hull did run better w the added length.
We had a friend w the 35.

Thanks, Gentlemen

I will be taking a trip, to look her over, and shoot pics, and video, of her next Sunday. Even though Puget Sound doesn't see "big water" I'm a firm believer in the "there is no success, like excess" attitude, when it comes to hulls. I'll post next week on my decision, but the more I read, and the more opinions I get, the better I like the idea. - thanks Again - J.P.

35 Magnum

The 8.2 liter diesels are way underpowered. They need a couple of 8v92 detroits. The hull is dynamite, but I would look for a 38 Magnum, all done. When you start doing pushups on that baby , you will have a small fortune in it. Buy one from somebody who needs the bucks and go boating now. I never saw anybody buy a boat, restore it and make out. you always find hidden sins. You can find plenty of Magnums between 20k and 40 k already done, ready to go, offer cash and steel a boat or dont buy it.

Ooopsy!

Thanks, 35 Magnum

I don't want to add the 2 extra tons to her, or raise the aft deck. I believe the 892v is taller, and much heavier than the 8.2. She would be running in Puget Sound, for fishing, and pleasure, not for speed. It would be a family cruiser.

I have not seen but a few 35's in the $20,000 to $40,000 range, and most seem to be in the $60K - $100K+ range. There is another 35' in Seattle for $24,500 but it has 496's in it, and I neither need the speed, nor the fuel consumption.

I would hate to see this boat being parted out, then cut up, and that may well be the owners "plan B".

They all cost time, and money... It's just a matter of how much of both you want to invest.
