magnum 25- engine choice

decided to remove 454 mercruiser gen 6 330 hp engine from my magnum 25. I never ran this boat, bought as a project. I am looking to repower, I believe stock hp was 300 with small block. What would be the best engine for replacement? I am looking for a reliable package and not to concerned with top speed.should I stay with a big block or maybe a 383 stroker?Right now I have a volvo 280 drive that I am hoping will hold up until I can replace with a bravo 1..OR, should I just purchase a complete engine and drive package and be done with it?

502 with bravo and enjoy your boat.

I've told you what I have in mine (see mag27's reply :D ) and I still have concerns with that drive on a big block and that boat ...re earlier post.

It probably all depends on how much you're willing to spend . A repower will involve new wiring harness , steering etc. but if you go b/b merc and Bravo you won't have the outdrive issue to worry about.
To get that thing happy you'll certainly need 400 at the prop at least.

Did you ever determine if it was originally a factory single or twin installation ?
What was the gas tank query you had last week all about ?

I looked at one about 4 years ago because the owner was selling the motor(540) and pretty much giving away the hull. The floor around the eng area was really soft and needed some tlc. It was yellow with a red boot stripe that appeared to be original. Don't know what came of it, too bad, I didn't know so few were built.

The pic of Bud's without the winshield and bowrail makes me wonder how one would look with a sportier windshield.
