It's definately best to prime the tanks with aluminum primer and then finish with cold tar epoxy.
I know it's an extra process, but it does protect the tanks indefinately as opposed to a bare tank. I prepped the tanks first by lightly sanding to scoff them up abit to give the aluminum primer something to bit to.....then washed clean. next day rolled on the cold tar epoxy. A side note: Cold tar epoxy is a "real" thick tar........I found to make it a paintable substance you have to warm it up abit..................I placed the gallon container of tar epoxy in a bucket of almost boiling water and stirred it.........otherwise it's impossible!!
