Help! Guys, ran into a rough spot this weekend! Damn epoxy gave out after 35 years (go figure) and I lost a cone! Damn near scared the **** out of Dad and I! Prop started blowing out and boat took a hard dive to the right. Figured out really fast that these things work! Anyway, needless to say I am on the hunt for a new one. Could have been worse, thought we blew a drive or a prop hub the way the engine would rev. Still ran good to about 4500 rpm and then the right prop would run out of water and start spinning! Very interesting experience that hope you all don't have to have! Also, another good reason that 60 is fast enough, as I believe we could have easily buried the nose if we were any faster. Any help you can give us much appreciated. Looking for a Hydro-motive 270 Volvo nose cone. Thanks, Jeff and Dennis. |
I'd be worried about the other nose cone as well, looks like the seam is opening up to..........Glad you made it back safe............never heard of epoxied nose cones!
|
Jeff I posted your need for a Hydro-motive 270 Volvo nose cone on the donzi.net site. There are many Donzi guys there that have Volvo drives & may have a extra one. Mark

Thanks Mark, much appreciated! Very nice gesture! I hope to find one as I will probably use it as a mold to make a dozen or so, got to be something a few people need.
Thanks again! Jeff Hey, by the way when is the reunion this year? Dad and I planning to attend. |
Jeff,, Bill [Conquistador_del_mar] in Texas May have one, he posted this on the donzi site
[If your friend can't find one soon, let me know. I have one on a lower unit that I am not using and I sold a new one in the box last year to a friend who might sell it. Bill
. |
Nose job Maltese
3 Attachment(s)
Just want to thank all who tried to find us a nose cone for our Maltese, much appreciated. However we didn't have any luck as of yet so back to factory original. Not too disappointed, just one less thing to worry about going forward and boat is really coming together as a very correct original just as delivered in 1974. snapped some pics of thei weekends project.
Thanks again, Jeff |
I am running these on my boat, If you elect not to remake, I'm interested in acquiring yours, and will take them to a local foundry .......
|
Mario,
I wish I could send the other one to you, but it was so old and made so poorly that it literally disintegrated on me! All I did was hit it a few times with a rubber mallet and screwdriver to delicately remove it and it fell apart. It had become very brittle and crystalized. It was just a matter of time before this one fell off too. I will keep my eyes open for one and maybe we can go in together and get some made? You do the same? Thanks, Jeff |
Jeff...............Sorry to be off subject, but are you still considering making those dash inserts?.........I haven't heard anything back from you!

Scip,
Made one and already installed it. See photos. Got about 175.00 into it, but it is beautiful. PM me if interested in one. Jeff |
Update!!!
Unbelievable! After 30 years of nose cones, one falls off and I pull the other one off and go back to stock. Got 400 more RPM and 4mph more! Wish they would have fell off sooner! So all you Volvo guys skip the cones! Got 5500 RPM and I think we could go up to a 21 inch prop if they made one for the long hub Volvo. Anybody got any ideas? Running 14.5 x 19 right now.
Thanks, Jeff |
mmmmmmm . .. .
Jeff, What is your power? My boat has two 465 HP 377 Cu In with Volvo 280 drives and nose cones, raised 2" on 29.5" centers, I run two of Grizzly's last Solas props, spinning out 15.5" x 21 and run 77 mph at 4400 RPM in glass smooth flat water . . Sadly I can't tell you if this was WOT as I wasn't paying attention to throttle position . . DOH! Mario L. |
Mario,
Running two Chris Craft 350's about 350-375 HP each. Getting 5500 RPM with 14.5 x 19 props. Power and RPM indicates I could go bigger with the props? This would get me more mph possibly? Hitting 56 on the GPS. These boats only advertised 55mph top speed from the factory and this was with the top power package which was the "Flagship" motor package. Thanks Mario, Jeff |
Guys,
My bad I am actually running 14.5 x 21 Michigan Stainless props not 19 pitch. Looks like my only option is Solas titan 23 Pitch. Anybody had any experience with these? They are 15 5/8" x 23 pitch. Will they hold up the horsepower? Thanks again, Jeff |

Jeff,
This what my notes say that I bought from Grizzly, but the props are labeled differently . . consider sending your props to Hale Propeller in CT or B Blades or Hydromotive Hale did all the prop work on Mighty Mouse . . and last I knew the owner there owns a Magnum 27 . . Mario |

Sea Giraffe here,
I haven't run it out with the raised X. Yours will do 73 or so with ease. How's the engine progress? Just hung out with Jack Stuteville today, he remembers Your 28 race boat when he worked for Vincenzo. You'll have to stop by next time you're in Florida. Jeff |

Lee,
I wish I could tell you!! My GPS speed and RPMs don't make sense with prop pitch when run through a calculator with Volvo ratios. I bought my props from Grizzly, last set he sold that we're a matched L&R turning set. These are Solas props he had made for the old Volvo drives working with Solas and using Donzi Classics. Unfortunately the boxes are labeled differently than the props and my emails with him are different from that. I want to trust my tachs, and the GPS........ Mario |

Over on the Donzi site the general consensus is to add 2" to the prop using a calculator, otherwise you get negative slip.

Calling the Sea Giraffe, come on in hallj what speed does your 27 sport pull with your engine build with the Volvo 280 drives and ?? props.
My 27 is on Bravo 1's with 383ci motors and 14.25" x 26" props but we have not been able to run it at any speed yet so what will be your guess ? Kalaazar Have you run your boat yet? Curious how this size of prop works for you as our power set up are similar, although the drives are radically different. Your props are likely 12" further behind your boat . . I'm starting to think that my 15 5/8" OD props are to large in diameter and that a smaller prop will run better. I can't trust the labeling of the props my offhand uneducated guess is that your pitch is to high . . ? |
Jeff/Dennis,
Your box is full so I couldn't PM you. Did you get new shocks for your seat posts? If so where, and do you have part numbers? Tom |

Tom,
PM box is now empty. We did get new shocks. I will dig up source and part # for you. Jeff |
I'd like to take this thread back to nose cones . ..
Jeff, your boat is stock and you gained 400 rpm w/o cones . . . I'm curious if nose cones may become effective at a higher speed .? . . does anyone know of a stock Volvo drive boat that runs well over 70 MPH ?. . mine has 280 drives with nose cones. I've run over 70 . . . but am very concerned about a nose cone failure . . . not certain I want to experience something failing at speed . . . Mario |
1974 maltese Magnum 28' Nose Cone Issues
All,
I have a 1974 28' Maltese Magnum with new 325HP 350 Chevy Vortecs that are all Stock. 600 Holleys, Pertonix Falme Thrower 2 Distributors, and 270T Volvo Drives. I have issues with the nose cones losing chunks of 3M Premium Marine Filler along the drive surface ahead of the nose cones. The boat was my Dad and it looks like the filler is making the drives wider. (too much) I have Nibral 3 blade elephant ear propellers from Hale Propeller with cupped edges. I get about 57 MPH at 5,300 RPM and I'm seriously considering ditching the nose cones and sanding those drives nice and smooth. I usually cruise at 43 MPH and 3,800 RPM out in the Long Island Sound. Questions: Will I potentially do better without the Nose Cones and cleaning up the filler? What should this boat with a clean unpainted hull get for top speed but with a good cruise option. (My Dad tried Cleaver Props in the late 80s and said it did 68 MPH but without a good cruise option) |
