27 Sport deck inlay.
 

I have a 27ft Sport and I need to refinish the inlay on the front deck. I've seen some that were natural wood, varnished maybe. Were those something custom, or only on boats of a certain year?

Einar, Most sports that I have seen built before 1976, mine had the wood looking insert, than from 1977 most I have seen had painted inserts. I believe by 1976 they could have gone either way. John Davis who I believe worked on your sport in the past was a wood artist to bad he is not still with us. I redid my 1973 sports insert with paint, just my preference. Mark

Mine is indeed a 76'. It used to be called "Volume Ben". Not sure what it meant but that's what it was called. My inlay is painted blue but it's in need of a refinish. I've built wood Championship Hydroplanes, restored a few speed boats and I think it would look great with a dark mahogany inlay, but I'm not sure it fit's the style of the boat. My thought right know is that if it was natural before, John Davis would have refinished it natural also.
I've got till Winter to decide. Having too much fun driving it now.

In the event that you have not seen this before attached is a picture of my 1971 Magnum 27 sport with its new Teak laid deck inset. It adds a great "old classic look" I think.

That is outstanding!!! It would match my cockpit sole perfectly. Did you do this? Now I have to rethink this whole thing. It does add that "Classic Look" for sure.

Many thanks for your kind comments, I am please that you like the effect.
I have to admit although it was my concept and design and whilst I fitted the insert I am not talented enough to have made it.
I live in a town called Poole in England and there is a local very talented one man band Teak specialist who is now very close to retirement and still make all kinds of boat parts in Teak only.
As is said when its gone it gone and I was lucky enough to be able to commission some of his custom bespoke work before he closes up shop.
At the Cowes Torquay Cowes Powerboat race last year my Magnum and I were invited to be the start boat.
Following the completion of the full re-build which took me four years part time. I found it most amusing that a number of people thought that my Magnum 27 Sport was a new build with a great retro look. Many were very surprised to learn that in fact the basic boat was 43 years old. It was and still is an outstanding piece of design work.

Now that's very nice. The standards of the refurb`s. are going up, does this mean that there could be a raise in used boat values also ?
