kevlar ?

Trying to buy a old magnum 28 race boat around a 1975 I heard some of them are kevlar hulls any Idea how many were? finally negoiated a price. Hopefully next week she will be delivered.:)

Fast Shafts 06-21-2003 07:58 AM

Cartman,
I would be carefull of any claims of boats made of "Kevlar". "Kevlar 49" (as it was originally called) was first used in boats in the late 1970's. Do a search using the word "Kevlar", there was a discussion not long ago on identifying Kevlar boats. If I remember right, it has a gold/yellow color and can be found in areas not covered with gelcoat ie; under decks.
What old raceboat did you purchase? Fill us in on the details, engines, drives, etc....

I am building a magnum for racing from the hull up. Complete with a brand new starfire deck and bulkheads. It was formally the deranged race boat but when completed will be the boat of the Pirate Racing team. The hull I am using is Kevlar and it has a goldish tint. When I paint it, it will be a black trimmed in white and red. Look for me sometime next year in P5

I just bought(3 months ago) a 1974 Magnum Sport with 350's and TRS drives. What a nice riding boat. I bought it from a 72 year old fellow. I have been hawking that boat for over 20 years, I approached him for the first time in September, and he said yes.

Just curious to what others think it weighs, and does everyone have dual 50 gallon gas tanks.

Winters are too lonnnng.

Magnum 27,great to hear your getting the boat together.About the weight thou i think your on the heavy side. When we won the nat.in St.Pete we weighd in on the crane with 65 gal, fuel and all the gear onboard at 5600 and if you deduct that you get around 5200 dry.I cant figure how the rest of the Magnums go 1200 more.Anyway have a good year an stay safe. magnum27 03-15-2004 08:53 AM

Mel, thanks for the weight info, I was wondering what the magnum's would weigh with a single big block. I am starting to gel coat the boat black right now and as soon as that is complete, it will finally be assembly time. The boat has come a LONG way. Still got a long way to go but I do see a light at the end of the tunnel now. Good luck this year at the races.

Mel,
Woluldn't you be lighter.
Your boat has single engine and Bravo Drive.

Typically 27 Sports have twins, with TRS and transmissions.

The 6500 lb weight was what I was told by the factory, when I was estimating what size of lift I needed for my boat.

Mag27 03-16-2004 03:17 PM

Magnuman, your right on that.I forget that they where twins and that some used trs drives also, getting old i guess, anyway have fun with your Magnum, their a great ol boat. Mel

Hey...Magnum27

How about an update on your single installation...and everyone...especially me...would like to see more pictues...especially your motor and drive.

I'm doing the same thing with mine...and am concerned about the C of G...do you know where it is...and did you leave the tanks under the cuddy ? Also, I was told that the cockpit floor can be lowered about six inches. Someone said they did it...but then maybee the tanks won't fit there anymore.

Thank's, Tony

CG is going to be fine with single .

The single engine is the way to go with these boats if you like flying it in the ocean . This 77 mag weighs in at 5800 lbs (that was with an extension box), so more likely 5650 lbs. now . Here is a pic of my older mag sport with twins .
Should have never sold it !

Re: kevlar ?

Hello FlyWithme(Tony)

When I had my 27 Sport(1973), I dropped the front section of the cockpit floor almost 8 inches and still had room for a pair of smaller tanks under the remaining floor in the cockpit. I had the two 50 gal tanks up front under the cabin floor and two 18 gal tanks under the standard height cockpit floor.
Hope that helps.
Jim
