Please Help New Boat Owner- Closed Cooling???

HELLO!

This 1990 31 Scarab with rebuilt 454 mags will be my 1st boat ever. I purposely bought from greatlakes because of salt down here in FL.

Some say that I should put closed cooling b4 ever setting it in salt and others are saying it is a waste of money. I want to keep the boat for 3-5 yrs... Other than occasionally hitting the bahamas it will be on a trailer and I will flush it. What do you think??? Will it make a difference for longevity for my purposes or will resale cover the 2-3g it will cost to do this?

Thanks!

Frank

just flush after every use .
even with closed cooling you still have to flush when your in salt water .
raw water well always go threw the header's or mainifolds and heat exchanger

Closed Cooling Concern... Please Advise

Hello... Yeah It Seems That Everyone Is Divided On This One... If 3-5yrs Of Weekend Use... If Closed Is Going To Make A Difference Mechanically On Rebuilt 454's 15 Hrs Ago???

I Heard That If I Run These In Salt, I Cannot Rebuild Them... Is This True??? And Don't Engines Only Last Around 400 Hrs Before You Have To Rebuild???

Any Advise Would Be Greatly Appreciated

You can rebuild them assuming you take care of them. People are scared of salt water for no reason... If you flush the engines after each use you will be fine. For extra protection is to use Salt Away.

If you are really concerned, Salt away or a similar product is your best friend in cleaning the whole boat. Get Marine block and coat all the metal surfaces with it.

I mean no offense, but my only concern in your situation is that you are starting with a 30+ footer instead of starting off with something a bit more reasonable... I'd say the average person with a 30 footer has at least a decade of experience under his belt. It's a lot of boat for a newbie.

well, that will depend on how many BUD Lites you have and were the trim limit switch is set........excessive RPM's will hurt you bad......i just replaced one with 248 hours on it......but if you take care of them, they will take care of you......:party-smiley-020:
