NC Sounds
Anyone run out in the sounds of NC? My folks live in KDH and we boat frequently out in the Albemarle, Currituck and Roanoke sounds. Almost never see anything but fishing boats out there.

We haven't gone much further north than the Southern Shores area up the Currituck, how is the water depth up there? We usually run from my parents place in Colington over to Manteo or up the Albemarle a bit.
Certainly not a OSO type boat, my old man has a Yamaha SX230, actually runs decent at about 55mph for having 2.0 liters of motor :) |
I go to NH every yr. and I don't think I've ever seen any kind of go-fast down there. I've been tempted to bring my boat but it seems like a lot of hassle to go through for limited use.

There are a few pockets of people that hang out around the albemarle sound but I don't know of really any down at Nags Head. There are some right out of Elizabeth City and the group I hang around with is up the Roanoke River. Running the sound can be a pain having to keep an eye out for crab pots and such but water depth shouldn't be a issue anywhere out there.

I am in the Elizabeth City area almost every weekend. I run the A.S. from E.C. to Coinyock Marina to eat a lot. Water depth is a big issue out there due to moving sand bars. I have ran up on 3-4 foot place out in the sound and in the North River that leads up to Coinyock it is very shallow unless in the channel, which is 8-10ft deep and 30ft wide in most places!!lol You have to be careful. Made the trip yesterday from EC to Coinjock, bit rough. On the way back we raced the rain and lighting the whole way in!! I have never burnt that much gas on that trip!!:lolhit: WOT almost the whole time coming back, stayed in the air as much as I stayed in the water:evilb:

Great weekend out on the Albemarle! Got out Friday night and the water was awesome, calm and suprisingly few crab pots. Came back in just after sunset. Went bcak out Saturday and it was quite a bit rougher, came back in around 1 to eat lunch and then back out again at like 4 or so. We saw a sailboat flogging the head sail about 3 miles out from the Colington Harbor inlet so we motored over to see if all was OK - they had it under control so we headed back towards Colington and had an awesomely wild ride! There were some big rollers out there Saturday afternoon!
