Potomac river question
Hi,
Does mason neck park have boat access.....like leesylvania park does. Thanks! Bryan |
No, it does not. Only Pohick Bay and Occoquan Park. Mason Neck is only for canoes.
|
bummer.....so i guess its car only access.......how is pohick bay???
Bryan |
Pohick is good a little steeper than Leesylvania and a little less parking
|
What are you trying to launch? Occoquan is the easiest ramp to use, but it has a long no wake zone to get to.
Pohick is steeper, but usually not too crowded. The only thing is the whole bay can get pretty shallow at low tide, and especially with wind blowing all the water out. Leesylvania was shallow inside the breakwall for a long time, but I do believe they dredeged it. It's usually very crowded on the weekend, and lots of amateurs. Another option is Hope Springs Marina a bit further south. |
I kept my 223 Formula and then a 31 Cigarette at Pohick Park in afenced in lot and loved it!. The ramps are fine and I never had a problem with parking (except for a few Bassboat tourney days) or shallow water. Although I can't remember the cost for storage or the yearly ramp fee, I do remember that it was cheap!

Guys,
Thanks....not looking for a launch area ..we launch from hope springs just trying to get family friendly day trip ideas for my 11 and 5 yr old girls this summer. Was hoping mason neck had a nice dock like leesylvania. Bryan |
Leesylvania has some nice bands that play for free in the summer out on the deck. They ususally start @ 7:00 or so so you can still make it back down south before dark. it is very kid freindly

Two hangout suggestions:
There is Mattawoman Creek directly east across the river from Leesylvania. Lots of folks go up in there, and raft/anchor off from shore for the day and there are always kids present. Outside of the Occoquan River, there is "Ococoquan Bay" where there are always boats rafted and having a good time. There are a few places to anchor close to land or beach it in there as well. I would recommend either of these as opposed to Leesylvania as they are primarlly fed by the River and Creek respectively, especially the further you go up; ala much cleaner than the runoff from DC coming down the Potomac. |
No swimming allowed at Leesylvania Park at all, not even from the beach. You are allowed to be waist deep but no swimming
