decible test at loto
Hey guys and gals just wanted to blow some steam off. Went to loto for the weekend and brought the new boat. Police try to run us down but frankly I wasnt goin got stop til we were in calmer water. They claim our boat was 86 dcb from a run by test. We are running merc 700s with gattling mufflers. We have been told these are legal. Next was the transom test what a joke 300 boats going by as they are taking the test 91dcb never the less we recieved a nice scratch from the police boat and a warning. Way to get people to want to come when business is down 50%. The police should worry about real problems on the lake like the rental companies who allow idiots to drive boats without training. Or there own driving skills. LOL done complaining. Weather was great! the Cove was naked as usuall and I meet some new great people. Cant wait till shootout! maybe they will let us take the tampons out for the race.

86db while running is legal??????? WTF???? 91 is just slightly over the limit.
You are not the first person to get damage from a WP boat. I know of 2 other people. One got paid and the other didn't. |

Its 86db at 50 feet or more away and 89db at idle at 3 feet behind the transom.
I've been stopped running and was at 89db. Correction, its 90db at idle. http://www.nonoise.org/lawlib/states/missouri/boats.htm |
You're lucky, Michigan law is 75db.
Cut and pasted from MCL law library 6.10 Equipment Requirements and Required Personal Flotation Devices A. Misdemeanor—Equipment Requirements MCL 324.80156 details the sound requirements for motorboat mufflers and underwater exhaust systems. MCL 324.80156(1) states: *MCL 324.80156(2) allows the DNR to establish rules for alternative sound level tests and maximum decibel levels. “Subject to subsection (2),* a person shall not operate a motorboat on the waters of this state unless the motorboat is equipped and maintained with an effective muffler or underwater exhaust system that does not produce sound levels in excess of 90 dB(A) when subjected to a stationary sound level test as prescribed by SAE J2005 or a sound level in excess of 75 dB(A) when subjected to a shoreline sound level measurement procedure as described by SAE J1970. The operator of a motorboat shall present the motorboat for a sound level test as prescribed by SAE J2005 upon the request of a peace officer. If a motorboat is equipped with more than 1 motor or engine, the test shall be performed with all motors or engines operating. To determine whether a person is violating this subsection, a peace officer may measure sound levels pursuant to procedures prescribed in SAE J1970, issued 1991-92.” A person who violates MCL 324.80156(1) is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by: • imprisonment for not more than 90 days; and • fine of not less than $100.00 or more than $500.00. MCL 324.80156(6). In addition, the person must install a muffler or underwater exhaust system that meets the act’s requirements before putting the vessel back in use. Id. |

I can hardly believe that any boat with any kind of through hull exhaust and the best mufflers could pass at 75db's.

The law they enforce here in western Michigan is 90db I was out with a friend this week to get his boat tested with new turn downs Cops ticketed him for 102 db before the modification and 96 after the mods He was trying a version that still allowed some blow by and that is why he is still above the DB but now is modifying to get the last little approved the marine patrol was testing 90 db and below to be approved By the way the ticket is $189 all other cival infractions are less cost with one exception (BUI) even improper boating is a lesser fine |
Loto wp has really changed the last two years. Its like they don't want any more people coming up there. Last years shoot out had more wp than I have ever seen on shoot out week end.

we will find out this weekend, i will be runing all over and have no mufflers, might not be bad if i am with the poker run, but we will see.

We got pulled over Sunday on the 7mm WP thought the Top Gun was too loud and ask if we had checked. I told him my buddy just bought it. WP didn't have his meeter with him to check it so he asked us when we got back to our place to call him and he would come over and check it. :Whatever:

Damn that sucks. We met you as we were leaving the no wake on Friday and then I saw you again on Saturday in party cove. Ive never been messes with, but they did say something to my buddy with the 28. He has HP500's with Whipples and no mufflers. I have a set of the Shotgun mufflers that automatically close via spring and so far they havent given my boat a second look when we go by, Then again i just have 496's for power.

Wild I laughed this weekend - we are crusing down the main channel in the new F boat, no name on it, no registration, and the WP pulls up running side by side about 40 feet away looking us over. I figure he is going to light me up, and just then a cat goes by us - 1 minute later he is lighting the cat up. Life is good.:ernaehrung004: |

The test they gave was not legal and I brought it to her attention its hard to hold it in court when there is 300 boats going by tring to get a static test was impossible. There was a pontoon that fired up that was 101 when she was trying to test us we just laughed. Trust me our boat is not that loud compared to others. I think what brought her attention to us was we were running pretty hard (in a safe place) and the props were leaving the water which makes some good noise.

I saw your boat when I was leaving Dog Days (I love the AT's) friday night but didn't see you. Maybe next time I will bump into you. Mine should be quiet enough you don't get much more stock than my old tub. I just wanted to know the facts if I ever get pulled over. -Josh |
I saw you out a couple times over the weekend as well. We might have been inside eatin. It was damn hot friday.
|
I don't think my boat is flashy enough to grap their attention at least during the busy season.
