Lets make sure everyone knows that I was not driving the boat when this incident happened. Mike was a trooper not a drop of red stuff in the boat:ernaehrung004:

This thread really needs pics of the water, but I guess most are a bit too busy to be snapping 'em when the water is nasty.

This last 4th of July leaving the fireworks at Four Seasons heading back towards the new bridge the waves were large. I was motoring like I was going up hill then when I crested I would back of the stick and surf down. Deffantly had to take my time. May sound kind of crazy but I like it when it like that makes me feel like I'm doing something. Need longer boat. Keytime have to work on Jamie to snap some pic's of the big stuff.

Knot 4 Me 11-11-2008 10:52 AM

The number of boats in the main channel around the 14MM on the 4th of July is nuts! We stay in a house in the old party cove at the 14MM every July during the 4th so all we have to do is idle out to the channel, watch the show, and idle back. Then we sit on the dock and look at the seemingly never ending stream of red, green, and white lights going by. It has to be one rough dog out there!!

Several years ago my mother who was a bit senile was sitting on our deck watching the fire works at the 28.5 mm and after the show she was looking out at the channel watching the lights go by. She looked at me as asked "Is that a highway?"

First thing I asked for was a towel! Come to think of it...there was no medicinal effect at all provided by the "Magic Medicine!" :drink:

As for pics of that water...I tried taking pics post-2005 Shootout riding in the back of Scarrab30s boat...we were running 75-80 alongside a 36 Apache and when I looked at what I took...I only saw sky!

I'll get on him to do that, Dan. Our place at the 3.5mm gets some rough stuff, but I don't think it's up to the standards set by the scenarios mentioned here. I'll see if I can get some good video next year as well. I have a lipstick camera I use as a helmetcam and have figured on attaching it to the boat, but I'll have to just use pieces of that video, otherwise viewers would likely hurl before long.

Here is a pic from Jamie of me on the ski near PC. This was Memorial Day Weekend of '07 when that NASTY storm hit. That rain hurt. The waves were decent, but not what they're capable of being.

Big waves = Big stories. I have seen a lot of big rollers at LOTTO. But I think any thing over 36" from a cruiser is stretch it a bit. I am not sure exactly how you would measure a wave. If it would be from normal water level to the waves highest point or from the waves lowest point under normal water height to the top of the wave creset. I promise you that there have never been waves at LOTTO like there was at this poker run I was in in Sarasota FL in 2005 5ft to 7ft. Here is a link and you could ask some of the other poeple that where there...

From what I've read on here, proper wave height is the distance from normal water level to the crest of the wave. With that in mind, I suspect that many people are measuring a wave from the trough to the crest, or double of the previously mentioned method.

From my experience, I would say that the biggest cruiser waves I've jumped on my ski were from 4'-6' from trough to crest. I can "surf" some of them and ride up and down them on the ski, so they're not small. I think that's a realistic guess. But 6' would definitely be the max, IMO. JM$.02.

Since the waves are caused by boats in multiple directions, the washing machine effect makes it quite chaotic, but I can't personally compare it to the ocean. I'd have to think those poker runs down south would get meaner waves, although possibly more predictable. ?????

Yes, when I estimated the biggest water I have been in at LOTO at 6' I was talking about being at the bottom of the trough and looking at the crest of what is next to me. No way it is 6' from normal water level. You get those big holes that form when multiple cruiser wakes start crossing each other. At the bottom of one of those holes standing in my boat the crests have been just below my eye level. And that is no story...

Try coming up here on a rough day sometime! Ran from my harbor in Hammond to downtown Chicago in 5-7s this summer...at 25 mph I couldn't keep the drives in the water. The waves are much sharper and chaotic on L. Mich than the ocean. LOTO is bad, but I've run across it at 75-80 in a 42 beaker without much of a problem on a Labor Day Saturday...Lake Michigan will bring you to your knees (or just knock you to the floor of your boat...that's happened to me a couple times).

320es 11-11-2008 04:21 PM

I don't care what anybody says. LOTO is a hell of a test for a boat. The waves are so confused there is no reading them. About the time you start getting a good rythym going the bottom fall out from under your boat. I had a great time after the shootout this year in the 24' but I was out of the water more than I was in it and it was just me and a buddy so I could run the way I wanted.

I would second that statement, 6-8 foot from the bottom of the trough is easily seen coming out of PC on a Saturday around 5pm. But I must say the crowds have been down the past few years and I haven't seen that kind of water since then. I can however remember one instance where all I saw was water surronding me and it felt weird going down hill on the water!!!

Makes it particularly sweet when we sat back in the 4MM cove and watched them over the hill - then idled back to the dock!:drink:

No, it did not turn out too well. One very severe ankle injury and several operations. Plus one huge best friend break up. I believe litigation still pends.

Was anyone here at aquapaluza this year cause that chit was insane

It made pc look like the kiddie pool

The funnest water in the last couple years was when OSS race let out on the Sunday Races in 07. This year it seemed like people leaving were more staggered.

We actually ran up to the 21mm and turned around and went back to the 9mm and back to dog days for dinner and by the time we made our lap there wasn't much more wave action than a normal saturday afternoon.

It's all fun but nothing compared to the Great lakes or the ocean.

Drver (my buddy) was ejected and suffered a severly broken ankle. Many operations (one of which he flatlined on the table) later and it is still not right but as good as it will get. He has no feeling in that lower leg or foot. Passenger (his best friend at the time) stayed in the boat but hit the dash and suffered facial and other blunt force injuries. He has fully recovered. The driver, who grow up in St. Louis and was a lifetime LOTO boater, has not returned to boat on the lake since the accident. The boat suffered minor damage (busted steering wheel, shifter/throttles, bent swim platform, etc.) and was repaired and still running strong on our local pond.

Just curious...in your estimation how fast was he traveling at the time of the accident?

Suit has been settled between the two.

I have boated on LOto for my whole life (33 yrs) There has never been a 12 footer ever......I might go along with 10 -12 foot from trough to crest which would make it a 6 footer....the 65 Marquis is the king wake thrower, However the owner just passed so it is sitting at the lodge....Leaving Party Cove on a good weekend (there were none in 08) you can see honest 4-5's and on a few fireworks let outs ( in the late 90's) after shootout 02 or 03 and after oss 07 there were honest 4 footers...... it is hard for the lake to get constant rollers unless every on is going the same way.....The largest water I have ever been in was Key West 98 and Daytona 01 (maybe it was 2k) and Loto has never seen anything like that.....

I completly agree an honest 6 footer is prolly the bigest ive ever seen and ive been boatin there for 20 years but that 65ft marquis doesnt even compare to that 75ft sunseker thats around the 40mm

I've seen over 100' quite a few times. Not sure how accurate my depth finder is in deep water though. I'm mostly interested on how accurate it is when it gets shallow, which is pretty close.

Pretty sure they sold that about 2 years ago.
