watch your noise

Just letting everone know that the missouri w.p.has decided to step up thier noise level enforcement! i have been boating on this lake for about 15 years and been stopped numerous times but never had them use thier meter on my boat.i'm running a 2000 38 fountain lightning with 500efi's completely stock and no modifications, according to thier little meter i'm at 94db which is 4 over the limit of 90db.the fine is 123 dollars with a county fee of 4 dollars. So if this is going to be the new big ticket for these guys i'm shure that alot of others will feel the same about this as i do! :bsflag:

Which lake?

fountain4play 07-11-2009 09:09 PM

Nothing new....

They've been testing boats with their db meter for quite a while...I got my ticket back in 2007 on LOTO....$125.00 and off the lake until I got my slip in muffler's installed...

I am surprised that a fountain with that stock package would be over 90. Especially with the swim platform and the resulting fountain rumble.

Any one got a meter so I guy can test himself before the wp does?

Smitty 07-13-2009 10:01 PM

Most states have adopted the 90 db level/law.

talked to fountain yesterday and they said that the built-in platforms actually make the noise level worse for testing.the sound cant resonate in all directions just towards the testing meter!

93 with mine thru silent thunder platform...

Try this, looks funky, but it works. 4" ss tailpipes, custom fab. Keeps the exhaust between the drives and pointed downward.

not at high speed tho. friend of mine had one here (ticket) 2 weeks ago because he was loud running 45 mph with twin 496 ho's...

pumpkin 07-15-2009 08:18 PM

turndowns don't work, now they are doing the pass by tests at 45mph, they have been ticketing anyone with a rooster tail. just keep paying the fines

Fountain4Play - What do you mean by 'off the lake'? Was that because you didn't want another ticket, or were your boating privaleges legally taken away due to unlawful equipment (noise)?

Fixxxer22 07-21-2009 01:18 PM

well i know i am screwed. i am louder than every baja and all fountains even with 500hp's people cmment all the time telling me i sound twice as loud from the beach as anyone else with a single engine. I do not have captains call and i have those huge gil risers that only have about 4 inches of rubber hose before they meet the transom. do they check you for alchol also at that time?

You give the MSWP any reason to pull you over, including noise, and you can bet they will ask you to submit to a sobriety test if they suspect or know you have been drinking.

I see some commented, but I have to add my $.02 (now worth $.01)

I don't know where you boat, but on Lake Minnetonka, MN, you have to Count On Them Doing a Complete Safety Inspection Including Alcohol check, not some of the time, but ALL OF THE TIME. My boat has had NO Alcohol on it since July 17, 2004. I don't want to talk about July 16.

Off Shore boats (like the red Porsche in the left lane) are just too tempting to the WP.

Water on the water, Beer at the Pier.

What it meant was I could do one of two things....pull the boat out of the water or take it back to my dock immediatley.... It wasn't an option to continue to boat the WP officer said he would notify the other offices that I would have safe passage back to our place 17 miles away...

Funny thing is that once I got the slip-in's installed and decided to take them out a couple weeks later the same WP officer pulled me over within a 1 mile of our cove the first time back on the water....

He wanted to know if I had quieted it down. Not wanting to be a smarta$$ since I just spent a couple grand to get it done I replied yes I had installed the mufflers... He then asked if I had them checked...at that point I fired up one of the motors and asked him if he thought I needed to?

He said no they sounded fine and we went on our way...I have no problem with the noise requirements but do miss the sound of the boat un-muffled... I knew it was loud, I even brought one of our db meters from work and it was 105db's at idle in the cockpit....LOL...

I might even have to sign up for the Shoot-out just to be able to pull them out for a weekend now that they have an agreement with the WP for all of the racers...

Trust me, for what you have, you are not going to stand out at LOTO for being loud.

They will pretty much check/ask you about alcohol usage anytime they stop you.

mrquad1 02-03-2010 11:16 AM

list state requirements

anyone knowing thier state or local db limits post them here as it will make a big impact on where all of us boaters will travel to,i personally want to hit several poker runs in different places but dont need a trip ruined due to not knowing all the requirements of the different places thanks:drink:

Griff 02-03-2010 12:42 PM

No noise enforcement here in Nebraska. I think it says 86 or 89db on the books.

getchasum111 02-03-2010 12:58 PM

Lake Cumberland has no noise restictions

MnFastBoat 02-03-2010 01:06 PM

Any boat operated on the waters of Wisconsin must be muffled to effectively reduce noise. Specifically, it is illegal to operate a boat that exceeds a noise level of 86 dB (decibels).

Minnesota
Boats built before January 1, 1982 must not exceed 84 decibels (dBA) during a pass-by test or 86 dBA measured during a stationary idle test.
Boats built on after January 1, 1982 must not exceed 82 decibels (dBA) during a pass-by test or 84 dBA measured during a stationary idle test.

Kansas
Any boat operated on the waters of Kansas must be muffled to effectively reduce vessel noise. An effective muffling system is required for the exhaust of each internal combustion engine and the use of cut-outs is prohibited. Specifically, it is illegal to operate a boat that exceeds a noise level of 86 decibels when measured on the “A” scale at a distance of 50 feet or greater.

Found this link online and replaced the state name in the url with what I wanted.

GK 02-03-2010 07:41 PM

I'm from Wisconsin land of a 86 decibel rule on the water but law enforcement does nothing to enforce the law on land against loud Harley motorcycles. It's also illegal to have captains call in this state. It's a classic example of too many law enforcement officials on the water with nothing to do except hassel people who have something they can't afford. I'm not talking about running loud boats on a small inland lake but Lake Michigan, give me a break. In Milw we have 2-police boats, 2- USCG boats, 1-DNR all patroling a FIVE mile radius. And of course they have to show activity to show they are actually working. A pathetic waste of money, too much government funding to these authorites.

mike tkach 02-03-2010 09:11 PM

not sure what the numbers are in illinois, but in my neck of the woods they are on the jet skies bigtime, more revenue per stop, and lets face it,ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.

Fixxxer22 02-08-2010 03:02 PM

thought i would update (though it has been awhile since i have returned from LOTO). I had no issues with the WP this has been the fourth time down there and no problems. I have even had one shout "go hawks" when i putted past him when he saw my iowa licences. i think you stay respectful and you will get it in return. but i took the boat to topsider and there was a guy sittin on the dock with an older cig. he was curious to see what i was running and swore to me that i would be stopped on the way back due to my noise. i just left it at that and thanked him for his concern. but that was it. only had one comment from a guy on a dock.

I looked at that db listing on cp performance that was posted above and found it funny that iowa has a 86db limit. there is absouletly no enforcement here in my pools and we have some real loud stuff here. just lucky i guess but i had to chuckle when i saw that.

xhere 02-09-2010 07:45 PM

I boat in Iowa and I didnt even realise that Iowa has a 86db limit...Luckily never been stopped before! Since all the development around Rathbun Lake probably just a matter of time...
