Run a MTI '55 with Volvo Penta's IPS-system?

I've had a fascination for the '55 for a long time and I'm contemplating a purchase...

But what I wonder is if it can be built with the Volvo Penta IPS-system?

This struff is incredible, you have superior manouvering capability and it uses alot more of the hp's in the engine.

So my question is; would it be possible to have a MTI '55 with four Merc 1350-engines and this system?

the volvo ips is a pod drive under the boat, that creates a lot of drag on a boat designed for surface or semi=surface drives

One word--fugetaboutit. The IPS was not designed for a high performance hull. You will ruin a million-dollar boat.

With the ease of shifting diesels and the maneuverability of a cat with drives so far apart, if you cant park it... It ain't for you friend.... Same for shifting 1350's... So they say..

Have you ever owned a powerboat??? Do you have any idea what a 55 MTI with 4 1350's would cost? Have you considered the fact that you can't get the 1350 CE approved to run in sweden, if thats your plan? That they come as an engine package? In all honesty, you sound waaay out in the deep end on this one. In other words. Is this a joke? Let's put #6's on a Seawolf sub too:rolleyes:

As Razor said the 1350/M8 is sold as a package. There is a 55 rigged with (2) Merc 1075s that runs 130-135. With (2) Merc 1350s you would be close to 150 WOT. That should be fast enough I would think.

Forget the pod it won't work on a cat hull.

Or you could get a 52 Skater with 1350's and do 170!!:evilb:

Was wondering when someone was gonna say that:D:D:D

schnydo 06-25-2011 02:52 PM

You Could Put The Skater In The Mti And Still
Run 130

Re

I don't even want to slow my Carver down with all that crap. If you can't dock your 50 plus foot Cat, you sure as hell don't need to be runnin' 100 plus.
Might want to think about an 18ft Bayliner first and work your way up.

Quinlan 06-29-2011 06:58 AM

It is pretty cool system. Got to play w a Formula 40 PC w it.
Now an MTI Fuggetaboutit

I didn't want to say that cause the OP is a newbie but I agree.

DollaBill 06-29-2011 05:55 PM

yes, keep him off the water. Great system for cruisers. Frankly, it was designed for the not-so-good captains with more money than sense ;). No place in this world

gare 06-29-2011 08:22 PM

I really didn't mean my response to sound as harsh as it did. I just get frustrated watching people have to use bow thrusters to dock 33 ft cruisers in wide open slips with no wind or current. All those systems are great systems but they're being over utilized by people too lazy to learn how to handle their boat. I will say they do have their place.............most of us have experienced the most intense pucker factor around the dock vs going fast.

Tantrum 06-30-2011 04:23 PM

Friendly group here....welcome to the MTI section
I think what they are trying to say is that big cats, (maybe cats in general) because of their width and how far apart the drives are, are for the most part not too difficult to maneuver.
The 1350's are showing some big numbers and you might be happy with just two. Turbines would be an option also.
What at least some of them don't get is if your in the market for a 55 with 4 1350's you really don't give a sh!t about buying the package and disregarding the parts you don't want. Resale??? Different league fellas!

Now...how about bottom paint?

black thunder 46 07-09-2011 12:10 AM

I hate it when i pull up to a dock and some one says o u got a bow thruster i dont use my bow thruster the only time i have ever used it was when we had realy bad wind at loto and i had to pull in a slip.

Short answer NO FRICKEN WAY!!!!!!!!!

PokerRun388 11-25-2011 05:33 PM

You've been wanting a 55 ? what are u waiting for... Pier57.com.. 2008 55 MTI, 1075s, 499K... If u dont like that one then just ask them about your volvo penta idea, it should get some laughs...:drink:

PremierPOWER 12-28-2011 06:40 PM

The IPS idea is unrealistic but I'm sure at some point we will see a 55 with four 1350's. I know there is a 55 with four 1075's. a 1350/ M8 is I think $50k more than a 1075/ #6 was. Whats $200k on a probably $1.5 mil+ boat. Im sure someone will do it. Anyone know anything on that "Jaws" quad 1075 boat? How fast? How much would that cost?

153 in the limiters,48 quad 1350s would be fast i'm guessing someone is prob doing one

PremierPOWER 12-31-2011 01:31 PM

153 thats it? Wow, I woulda thought much faster with 4 1075s. Whats a 55 MTI run with twins?

Whats the smallest MTI with room for quads?

schnydo 01-01-2012 09:09 AM

It's a massive boat 2 1075s = 130 i think
4 motors either all models or it startswith the 48 ??

Why put all that weight on the transom I would go with turbines, light weight and reliable.
