36 vs 43
Hello,
So having serious interest in a Nortech Cat and having watched them especially on OSO over the last year or so, a question comes up. Lot of 36's are available. I see a fair amount of them for sale but what about the 43 ?. Why are there so few of those ? Is it production numbers, do they have to have huge power to move or are they just not efficient. It seems to me that the 36 is fairly cramped in the cockpit and the 43 would give you some more room in there. I am not sure if the cabin area is bigger in the 43. If the 36 is the Hot rod is the 43 the large performance touring model ? Can somebody that has experience with both give me some feedback. Thanks |
Thank-you for asking that question and i would love to see the response you get from Mr Sobo!
Terry, the microphone is yours! We are all ears! |
As for the numbers. 80 36's have been built compared to 21 43's. The 36 came out two years before the 43 which is now 44'.
36 beam 10'9" 43 beam 12. Of course it's going to take more HP. Cabins are about the same in both. The 43 would compare in size to the 46 Skater. A bigger boat just takes a little more of everything. Hence the stronger popularity of the 36. The next model out the door will be a combination of the two. 39', 10' 9" beam with a 1 1/2' more in the length and 1 1/2' more in the width of the cockpit space making it much roomier. Sounds like that would be the boat for you! TS |
What are base numbers for the 39 with 1000's pump fuel!
|
Thanks for the technical comparison and production numbers. If I could hear from somebody that has experience with owning both and what real world differences and advantages there are in-between the two models.
Thanks |

Will the new 39 footer have seating for four in the rear or still three as the 36 offers?
seating for four in the rear |
The 43 is alot of work to go to the lake and takes big power to run. It is also a porpoising fool. The 36 is such a better package for boating where the 43 is more of strictly a poker runner. The 43 is too wide for most roads also.

Does porpoising issues increase as the lenght of a cat increases? If so would that mean the 39 will be better than the 43 but worse than the 36? |
porpoising on the 43
I have a 36 cat with Nortech 1150's--With proper driving skills you can utilize drive and trim techniques to minimize the hops. Or you can hit the gas and get the boat from 55 to 88 and power through them. Once you have about 10 hours in the seat, your comfort level increases and your understanding of the differences coming out of a v-hull is realized. I have owned a number of different lenght and powered v-hulls and there is no greater adrenaline rush or fun than driving a 36 supercat. Especially at 125-155 miles an hour. This boat loves 100 mph. It is strictly a drivers boat!
What I am hoping to learn from this forum is if the keel wedges I have recently seen added to the 43 are really gonna fix the hopping problem I been told of. Why have they started jerking the tunnel tabs off of the 43's and by moving the boat to 44' did that help solve the C O G problem. Is the 44 a new mold or is it a modified 50'? I too am considering making the move up to the next size, however, I must be convinced that the ride, along with the increased cockpit space is worth switching from the 36. You can go on line and get travel permits from a company named Suretec. They will call all of the states and get your travel certs to haul wideload for a couple of hundred dollars or you can call each state and work on line and through faxes and do it your self for less. Terry, I know this is a delicate conversation, but give us the best advice for safety and comfort of ride! I'm gonna buy a Nor-tech. I just want to buy the right one. I would like to take a test ride in both the 43 and the 39, will those hulls be in Destin? |
The 43 with 1075's is a pretty badazz hot rod. It absolutely eats big water and runs out to 150 on stock power. HUGE is the best description I can offer really. The boat just feels really big but amazingly, at speed it feels really light. Yes, there is some loping but who buys a 150mph cat to drive around at 70mph? The 43 seems to settle into a really perfect ZONE at 120. The world just seems "right" at that speed. The wind noise actually decreases, the combo of lift and hull wetted surface is perfect. You cover water in short time and you don't need to hold her to the fire wall to run 120.
I was recently on a poker run with board member cloke in his 43 and we were running 120/130 beside a friends 36. The 36 sure spent alot more time in the air than we did. Heck, we could barely feel the waves that were actually launching the 36 . If I had the peso's for one of Nortechs cats, the bigger kitty would get my money. |
I had been a deep V fan from the beginning, but after a ride in a 36 supercat - that all changed. The pure acceleration rush (2-850's) from the 36 was mind numbing and left a massive impression. The speed was simply incredible, but even more so was how stable, flat & confident the hull ran throughout its range. Furthermore, and in all honesty, at nearly 140 - I had saliva trails streaming down the sides of my face thanks to the Joker-smile I couldn't get rid of! Like a dragster on the water. A supervee accomodates all your family's needs, only a supercat will accomodate YOURs. I'm sold on the 36, but if a ride on a new 39 comes available (I'll spring for gas!), perhaps it will be just as impressionable. 36 36 36.

The plain and simple fact is that the tunnel on the 43 is very large. Great for big water and top end but takes longer to pack. This resulted in more mid range hopping. We experimented with various tunnel tabs and then extensions (much like you see on Skaters). The extension virutally eliminated the hop at most any speed. There's one side effect. When running at moderate speeds in a big following sea the end of the extension can catch causing an uncomfortable buck. However there are a number of owners out there that are very happy with that set up. The final solution was to lengthen the hull by 12". This was accomplished with the wedge filling the notch on existing boats. The end result is you get some of the mid range hop found on all cats but none of the adverse effects. Feel free to call me anytime with your questions. I'd be happy to discuss our boats with you. Terry 239-567-5030 x 14 |

Beau, not to spoil your fun, but that is not me, I loved my 36, did'nt notice the hop on mine, props needed to be cut down to 16.75". I think the 39 will be great because it has the larger cockpit. I'm now in a 40 Skater, totally different animal, cruises 100mph at 3500rpm and just kills big waves.
