Nor tech over MTI........why
I have been wanting a cat for 3 years now. I have noticed the Nor Tech is cheaper than the MTI and have looked at a few Nor tech's online. For those of you that really understand these cats, which one is the better choice. I am asking for an exit strategy. If I don't like a cat, then I want to be able to limit my losses. Nor tech is less expensive and I hear the MTI is a great boat. Any comments........?

Curious to read those who knows!

Here's a couple quesrtions I have that will really help figure this out:
What size range are you looking? What price range and you looking? Would you prefer a small bathroom/cabin? |
from what i have seen , Nor Tec more amenities and MTI more Race

I have been looking at 40' to 42' cats. I am interested in 1100's to 1350's. As far as price, I am wanting to pay in relation to the value so I dont get stung too bad if I don't like a cat. Some love Nor tech and others say they are too slow. I see Nor techs in the 250k range Formula 382. I expect this forum to love the Nor tech since that is the group here. Just looking for pros and cons. Price is part of it but wanting a boat that is easy to turn if I want too.

Both are great boats. For Cats specifically, the MTI's are much more relevant because they continue to produce (and innovate) their Cat line-up. Whereas Nortech just does Luxury V's and Center Consuls now. Also make sure your comparing apples to apples with power/features/etc. It will be more difficult to find a Nortech with the modern Mercury 1100/1350's & digital dashboards, etc. that everything is trending towards now because they haven't made many Cats recently.
As far as resale goes, either brand has a great reputation and will be able to be sold as long as your initial purchase was for the right price. Best of luck to you! |
I will be using this boat on Lake of the Ozarks, not that it matters but it is a big river vs open lake. I like the MTI because they are built in Missouri. Should be able to get help if needed. Any comments about motor size. I like the idea of turbo vs supercharged. Comments....?

Top ends on the turbo motors are EXPENSIVE compared to supercharged.

Thank you. So is the perfect boat like a 40' with 1100's? Mike |
A 36 Nortech or 36 Skater are the same overall size as a 40 MTI. Honestly, if easy out and not a lot of risk financially is what youre looking to accomplish, then go buy an old 36 Skater with 6's. I'll bet something in the $120K's would get it done on either of these:

The second Skater that is in Texas was built by a good friend back when it was new. It will run just over the 150 mark with the original 900"s that we had in it. Looks the same as when it was first built without the name we had on it.
I'm sure it would handle LOTO without a problem. |
Here's another boat that will be easy to get out of and not lose much, if any money:
