Install Cam w/o Pulling Engine in Nordic Rage/Heat

Has anyone installed a cam w/o pulling the engine in a Nordic Rage or Heat.

Or asking a different way, how difficult or easy is it to remove the back seat frame to access the front of the engine in a Nordic Rage or Heat?

Thanks!

You have to remove the 8 x 4" long wood screws that hold the seat frame to the floor. Then you need to remove the screws which hold the upholstered panels to the sides of the engine compartment. Pull these panels towards the engine and reach around on each side of the seat, above the fuel tanks, and remove 2 lag bolts from each side of the seat. You can then pull the seat forward and lift it out of the boat. You'll need to unbolt and remove the rear hatch in order to lift the intake manifold off the engine. It's a very tight fit in the front and top of the motor.

I'm not familiar with the 496 (yet ;o) but on the Gen VI blocks you have to drop the pan a bit when changing the cam. This may or may not be a problem on the 496. Check with Ray.

Honestly, you (and one other) could have the motor out and sitting on a stand in just a few hours. Might save you some wear and tear to the interior

Just a side note, When you pull the exhaust risers to remove the restrictors (part of the Raylar install) you can have them polished and they look very nice. They're stainless :D

Sounds like your winter project is taking shape nicely :evilb:

You should be able to pull the motor in about an hour. Thats assuming you have the lifting ability. Be carfule they are heavy.

You also have to remove the intake to get the lifters off the cam. Drop the pan. Good chance of an oil leak. Definate wear on the interior. I am not a fan of removing seats etc. They never seem to go back in the exact place.

Good Luck

I had to remove the port interior side panel on my Heat, to through bolt pop up cleats that I installed in the side decks.
To remove the side panel, I also had to remove the rear seat.
Based on the time I spent doing this, and the additional access to the engine you will have after removing it, I would definitley yank the motor.

And our survey says...... Pull it :evilb: :evilb:
The top half of the motor has to come off for the Raylar install anyway.

I've never tried to pull the motor out of any Heat with the back seat in but if I remember right the motor has to slide forward enough to clear the back deck (hinge area) before it will come up. On the Rage it appears the same; they even had to notch the fiberglass there for the exhaust risers.
The seat may have to come out regardless :(
It's really not a big deal to remove the seat, of course that's after about a dozen times :D

Let me know how you fair. I will likely be doing two Heats and a Rage with similar upgrades with Whipples on top this winter.
My pair will have to wait I suppose

What's the skinny on the Raylar? I have heard the name but never looked into it. Where can I read about them?

Linnie,
Just do a "search all threads" on Raylar.
