I lost a tooth on the upper gearset, pushed the gears apart, etc, so I'm out a complete XR upper housing. The gearcase (we'll check IT  ) seems OK. Funny thing was, I was cruising about 45MPH  ........ one of my Nordic friends who was riding with me said "you were going too slow". Oh well, rather now than March or April. BobL, I am ordering another 1" spacer to test when we get her buttoned back up. I'll let you guys know how it goes. I HOPE it works as well as yours. Regards, Steve $4000 later, all the parts (new complete XR upper housing, small parts, and 1" spacer) are on the way. There goes the fun money (cam/kit & heads)! Easy come, easy go ..........F'ing Bravos  . Regards, Steve |
Re: nordic heat projects
XR's biggest problem is the needle bearings installed in the gears. I replace mine every season. As they wear, the needles start shifting out of wack do to the extra clearance. It just a time factor at that point. They are cheap and realatively easy to replace.
They are many caged berings for the old Bravo gears that keep the needles verticle. AS of now, I do not know of any that will fit the XR gear. Max Worx has one that was in my old drive, They cut out an addition .030 out of the gear and used a race that was also .030 less than the XR Race. They are pricey for those gears but they are worth the money if upgrading. Good luck Steve. |
Re: nordic heat projects
Steve,
After I scrambled an X drive on my previous Heat I bought a new XR from Bam and had Max go thru it before I ever put it on. They installed their caged gear bearings, tower race, caged clutch shaft bearing, seal carrier, torsional clutch shaft, top cap, etc and set up the clearances. This was the 3rd year running 800-900+ hp with no issues. It will be going back to Max this winter for a good maintenance service. I'm sure the Redline HD Shockproof and a centrifugal SC helped quite a bit in making her live. Probably a bit lucky as well :p Dave |

I did not do enough preventative maintenance, and I'm paying for my lack of attention to this drive. Several of the drive experts that I've talked with this week while looking for replacement parts mentioned checking the clearances and reshimming annually, and that would extend the duty cycle of the drive. I like your bearing replacement idea too. Something we used to do when I was racing outboards, was Magnaflux high stress parts, like shafts and gear sets. I sure wish I had done that on my upper gear set  ......... Oh well, another expensive lesson learned. 750HP probably isn't helping a drive rated to 600HP either  ................ Thanks, Steve |

How much was this mod? I may consider doing that to mine as it's still "fresh". Regards, Steve |

Seemed like Max charged you as much as they did me. When I sent the check I thought I was crazy. After three seasons of a blower motor withoout issues it seemed worth it.

A 500EFI Whipple install on my former Heat. Then the fun one will be the addition of a R-Tech Supercooler setup on the Heat with my old motor. It currently runs a solid 95+ at Havasu so we'll be in search of the mighty triple digit  Also, if you didn't know, you can order the duplicate vinyl skins from Peggy at Nordic if you supply the VIN number. I did this with my rear seat last year. It was $150 and then $50 for the local shop to steam the foam and replace the cover. A perfect match. That back seat takes a beating :( Dave I Called nordic ..my 1998 heat has a different seat build up, he said they change in 2000. my sun pad is 8 " smaller. no skins for me :( but thanks for the info |
