28 Heat with Whipple SC
2 Attachment(s)
I joined OSO a couple of months ago on the recommendation of a friend and never looked back, congratulations on having a great forum!!
Now I'm looking for help with my project.... I have a 28 Heat with a 496 MAG HO and I'm considering installing a Whipple SC. I understand the risks with installing the SC on the 496, and appreciate any comments on other engine mods that were completed (pistons, rods, crank, etc.). What other mods did you do during the upgrade, or regret not doing during the upgrade? (outdrive, steering, etc) Yesterday I was trying to see if I had the required 3 inches in front of the motor. In the photo I placed the level against the water pump/crank pulleys and then a square on top of the intake manifold to show where I think the input shaft/pully will be. I've got about 3 inches in front of the tank, but it disappears as I move up towards the sqaure due to the angled seat back. I guess the seat, hatch, and hatch/cockpit interface area have to be modified? Thanks for your help! |
Re: 28 Heat with Whipple SC
Hi Mark,
I've installed the whipple on my 496 in a 25' Rage a couple of summers ago. Your pictures look virtually identical to mine. The 3" inches for clearance that whipple talks about is not correct. You will need at least 4 1/2 inches. The 3" is to the front of the pulley. There is belt tensioner a little lower down that is actually over 4" from the stock belt. I don't think that you can pull the seat to far forward. You will also need to notch the fiberglass lip on the engine hatch. Plan on some basic upholstery work also. I made my first cuts based upon the 3 inch dimension and ended up with a headache. I think that I have a couple pictures on my home computer that would help visualize the situation. I'll see if I can find them tonight.:drink: Pat |
Re: 28 Heat with Whipple SC
I've always said "pictures are worth a thousand words"! :D
I thought the tensioner would be far enough down on the starboard side that I'll have enough room due to the sloping back seat. Did you have to move the your back seat forward? Looking forward to the photos!! Mark |
Re: 28 Heat with Whipple SC
Mark just go with the raylar.....I have 45 hours on mine since the install and have had no problems..There is no need to move seats or upholstery work ...No need for the high octane Fuel with the Raylar..With the Whipple you gotta be more Carefull with your lower Unit....Go for the raylar you already know that it works

Re: 28 Heat with Whipple SC
The original photos are of a much better resolution. Let me know if you would like me to email them. You could zoom in for a more detailed look.
I ended up fabricating a wood box that mounted to the seat behind the upholstery to keep things neet. You will need to rework the top trim piece that fits on the front of the engine hatch. Mine turned into a bit of an ordeal because the first shop I brought the seat to took off on a tangent. I ended up getting another shop to redo all the work. That story would take a few paragraphs so I'll just save it. The whipple is a great kit. :D I did the install myself without any major hickups and I would do it again. The components are all first rate and the support from whipple couldn't have been better when I had questions. Because of the altitude at which I boat only a supercharger made sence to me. I had max machine worx install some upgraded shafts and their top cap on my bravo1x. There is always more than one way to handle your need for speed, I'm happy with my choice. Let me know if you have any questions. Pat |

Pat;
Nice job!! From what I see I can guess that you are a patient man... The photos you posted are great, I can enlarge them enough to see all the necessary details. So now I now it fits (with a little encouragement) and know what I would have to modify. Thanks for your assistance, this is just what I was looking for!! Mark P.S. Your interior colors look great, got any photos of the outside? |

Thanx Mark,
Heres the boat and tow rig. |
Re: 28 Heat with Whipple SC
Isn't there a pretty good difference in room between the Rage and Heat? I've seen both but can't recall how much difference.
|
Re: 28 Heat with Whipple SC
I was thinking the same thing until Pat posted pictures. Compare post #5 (Rage) against #1 (Heat), the distance between the seat back and engine are identical!!
I thought the SC install was just a bolt on as you can purchase Mercury's HP600 SCI as an option from Nordic on both the Rage and Heat. BobL told me the 502 ci block is shorter than the 496 ci. I fell over when I checked Mercurys website and found an 11 inch difference between the two !! |
Re: 28 Heat with Whipple SC
Mark you have nothing to say about the Raylar post??????
I know you just want to go faster then me...Not sure you will with the Whipple....If you do go faster Guess i will just have to install a whipple and I should be near 80MPH.....(Not) |

Here are a couple of pictures of a Nordic Rage with a Whipple that are in the classified section. They show how the finished installation/seat/hatch works.

Re: 28 Heat with Whipple SC
LOL!! Hey Bent!! I've been looking at both with BobL, the attraction of the Whipple has a couple of advantages (IMHO)
Best HP/$$ spent ratio Easy return to "stock" when selling the boat The negative side is tearing up the drive, steering(?) and 91 Octane gas price.... I wanted to talk with you yesterday.. PM me your tel number.. |
Re: 28 Heat with Whipple SC
The Heat is deeper so the deck lid may not need to be cut(as much). Just have to work it out. I thought someone on here had a Heat with the Whipple package.

Re: 28 Heat with Whipple SC
I rigged a 496HO Whipple in a Heat this past year and had to have the identicle work done as Comfortably Numb.
It does not fit without seat mods. Dave |
