Fortunately, it's running well again (93 with a light load), and with several upgrades (supercharger, cooling system, drive, drive shower, studs, gaskets, fuel pump) it should be back to RELIABLE:D , like the good old days! I finally got to run the boat fairly light (3/8 tank/1/4 tank/1 person) today with a borrowed 32" Bravo1 Merc lab. The boat ran just over 94 on the analog Gaffrig (GPS) speedometer, and 94.5 on the Garmin 172C, @ 5700.
Conditions were good except for gusty winds making drivng a little interesting:rolleyes: ............reminded me of my Allison days:D . Regards, Steve |
Steve, I was thinking that my 29 P5X may not be enough for my boat now and that you may be interested in it. I dyno'd my engine yesterday and got 923 HP. That's 150 more than what I was running last summer, Spinning the 29 at 5550 at 86-87 MPH. Of course once the hot weather hits, you will lose a little speed, so the 29 may be just perfect. I should know in a few days. Engine is going in the boat today.

Wow, those are some killer #s. I was wondering how your new set up was coming. I ran old reliable yesterday (my 28P5-X), and it ran just over 90 @ 5850 with 4 adults and full tanks/cooler/porta potty/etc., so I think that's going to be hard to beat. But I sure would like to test your 29" too. Why don't you bring it to the Jamboree and I'll see how it works? Let us know how your testing goes! Our formula says you'll see another 9 MPH:D ............ Best Regards, Steve |
I did finally get my boat going. Just in time for Memorial day. It ran great all weekend, but didn't get time to really run it hard and tune it. I made one WOT pass and got it up to 91.4 on the GPS. It was still climbing slightly when I backed out of it. This was on glass slick water, 85 degrees and rainy, 80 gallons of fuel and 3 people on board. Last year under those conditions it would have run 83-84 at best, so that's about where I expected it to be.

Great #s for the conditions:cool: ! Sounds like there's plenty left. What prop were you running? See you at the Jamboree! Regards, Steve |
Bob , was the 150hp increase just do to the JV head work or was there other mods as well that contributed?

I made a lot of changes so there's no way to really say what made the difference. I lowered the compression from 9.5 to 8.5, had a custom cam ground and of course the head work. I also ported the throttle body quite a bit. Before the throttle body mods it made just slightly more HP than before. So, it would appear the cam and head work offset the compression reduction. Then I was able to increase the boost to get back to where I was, compression wise. |

Anyone else notice that on all the pics of the gauges, it seems only the speedo is working? Weird...
|
That's because it is a GPS speedo with recall. Just flip a switch and it shows the maximum speed you hit. A lot easier to take a picture of that than when you are running 90+MPH.

Didn't know that...cool feature.

Only Appleton can run 127mph with his boat off......at half throttle.:D

I did a little more testing yesterday and got some data. It ran 92.2 right at 6000 RPM with the 29 P5X. Smooth water, 90 degree temp, 2 people, full fuel. I think I'm going to order a 32 B1 and try it. I'd like to get the rpm to around 5800.

Sounds great. I am bringing the Merc lab 32" that I ran 94.5 light (@ 5700) to the Jamboree if you want to test it. It's pretty sweet. Please bring the 29" P5X. I would like to test it. Regards, Steve |
So with the 8.5:1 compression, head work and new cam but the same boost as before you made slightly more hp than before? Then you opened up the TB and increased the boost and got the final big jump in hp?

Yes that is basically correct. However, it hit a bottleneck and would not pull past 5600 with the 7 psi pulley before, so I couldn't really raise the boost in application. I just tried it on one dyno run. It made 800 HP at 6000 rpm with 5.5 psi boost before. After the rebuild it made less than 5 psi boost with the same pulley and made just slightly more power. Changing pulleys raised the boost to 6.5 and it would pull all the way to 6000. I talked to Dustin about raising the boost and he told me to port the throttle body because it was a restriction at that HP level. Doing so raised the boost 1 psi and picked up about 50 HP.

How big was the TB before and after you opened it up?

It's a huge 2000+ cfm throttle body. The problem is the way it is machined for the flame arrestor, which sits inside, causes a significant restriction when the FA is installed. By opening it up beneath the FA you gain a lot of surface area for air to pass through.

Bob,
I ran the boat before leaving Cumberland yesterday. It ran a quick 90 @ 5850 with my 28". Went straight back to the dock and put your 29P5-X on. Boat handled great, acelleration was very close to the 28". It took me a little farther to run it out, and every time I got to 90 I would get into rough water and have to back down. It ran 90 @ 5700, but felt like it was still pulling, maybe another mile and hour or 2. I think it would be a good all round prop, keep my Rs down some, and be more efficient (fuel) in the mid range. It was good to see you and the Texas crew. Your 29" is going out via UPS this morning. Thanks for letting me borrow it. |
Steve and Bob,
Has anyone tried the PX-5 on the 35 Nordic? I tried Mercury's Maximus offering with little success. From watching both of you last Saturday they certainly work for the 25 and 28. Bob, that 25 is a rocket ship! |

Bob, that 25 is a rocket ship! I am not sure if anyone's tried them on a Flame? I would ask Matt and Julie at Throttle-Up www.throttle-up.com . I agree on the Maximus. It's a big windmill. Matt tells me with a lot of work, they can be made to run, but it's a lot easier to start with a Hydromotive. I have a friend who is running P5-Xs (stock 30s") on his 42' Fountain with modified 575s. It's running in the low 90s, so they are working on his step bottom with twins. Seems like they would also work on a Flame. Regards, Steve |
They were running 5 blades on the single engine (1200hp)Flame (IMCO) with the splitter but I don't remember which. If memory serves me it was running 100+. I'm sure the weighting difference would make it a non apples to apples comparison though. It does make me think that it likes transom lift which the single engine setup was creating. Just a thought
I'd be interested to know as well. Dave |
