496 ho rev limits

Recently purchased my 07 rage, This past weekend I took it wot and a steady alarm sounded. When it alarmed I looked down at gauges and did not see anything abnormal, but i did not get a read on rpm as i backed off just as fast.
Question is does the boat alarm with over-rev?
is there anythng else that would make it alarm at wot?

In2Deep 05-17-2010 02:44 PM

You hit the rev limiter alert at 5,150 RPM's.

mreedy 05-17-2010 03:18 PM

Thanks for reply and info of 5150.

So I guess Im talk'n Props now.? I'm not real familiar with this stuff but I do want to run my boat when desired.
Im running a Brav1 -24 p - 4 blade.

Indiana Rage 05-17-2010 05:28 PM

I have got a Bravo 1 26 pitch four blade prop and hit about 5000 - 5100 at WOT and about 78 mph. I had a 28 Pitch on it when I bought and could only get about 4700 rpm's out of it. I found a used 26 at Unlimited Marine in Russell Springs, KY, they said they prop all their Rages with a 26.

I have a buddy offering me to borrow a left handed 26 but its left handed. Is it ok to test it running reverse?

What motor do you have? I have been depressed about its performance hearing so many saying its a 73-75 mph boat and all Ive seen is about 72 on gauge. 72 to on gauge tells me about 68 on gps.
I have also trying to get these trim tabs figured out (Dana Marine HP1000 23") I have no indicator and I cant seem to get it on top of the water.

Welcome to the Nordic board.
That is a big tab for your boat. They could be dragging excessivley and causing lost lift and speed. When you have them fully retracted (up), are they above the hull surface? You can check this with a 4' level or 2"x4". If not you may be to machine a different mounting position (further out) for the trim ram(s) on the tab, which will pull them up.
On my Heat I am running 17" tabs that are 1 1/2" above the hull (at the tips) when fully retracted. The only time I use my tabs is to plane off a heavy load, or correct a lateral imbalance.
Otherwise I always run them all the way up.
Regards,
Steve

Welcome!

I wouldn't have thought you could get the rev limiter with that prop. Guessing your close to sea level. Guys around here (4500') run 23's & don't get that many revs. If a 26 works, I have a labbed 28 that should turn about the same as a 26 & get you a few more mph that I'd like to unload.
As far as the tabs, you should rarely need them. I only use mine in rough water to smooth the ride.

Previous owner installed the tabs. I think a little overkill, but they look good. I mainly boat on the Mississippi and never worry about big chop.
As for the positioning of tabs, Yes fully "up" they are above the hull. Ive been play'n with them trying to go fully up then bump down to get parallel with boat. maybe I'll just keep fully up.

Was going to put in pic of tabs position up but dont see option.

Oh yeah,
Here's a pic of my mechanical trim gauge. You can also add a slot for your drive. These are more accurate than electric or LED gauges. You can get it all from Livorsi. They now have them with LED tips on the indicators.
Another idea, if you find those big tabs to be too much for your boat, you could have them machined down to 17"s and repowdercoated.

Steve

I've driven quite a few Rage's with 496 HO's and have never seen more than 72 on GPS. Usually more like 70. They all ran 26" Bravo 1 props. That is in normal (hot) weather and about 700' elevation. With the 24" prop , it is likely your boat was used at higher elevations. I drove a demo Rage at Lake Cumberland a couple of years ago and the best it ran was 68 on GPS. We all hear stories of people running 75 in a stock Rage and I know some are credible, but I've never seen it. Also, the closed bow version is a couple of MPH faster than the open bow, and running full fuel hurts tops speed a little bit. Glass water also costs 1-2 MPH. Add all these things up and you can easily see a 3-4 MPH variation from one test to another.

I'm hoping to try that 26 by this weekend, If you want you could shoot me an email of your asking price [email protected]

and yeah the elevation here on the Miss river is 572'

Thanks Mark

If Mark isn't interested in your prop I might be. Send me a pm if he isn't interested. He asked first, so he should have first dibs.

I have a 496 HO, I agree with fuel load, temp, and just a little chop.

mreedy 05-18-2010 06:45 PM

Indiana Rage, Wanna Trade motors Only 117 hrs? LOL
I've only run in it glass like water and awaiting some good chop. I do have the closed bow and really hoping I get better results.

Indiana Rage 05-18-2010 06:47 PM

I am quite happy with mine, I have only 118 hrs on mine. What engine do you have in yours?

mreedy 05-18-2010 06:55 PM

496 Ho

Nice boat. I like where your tabs are mounted/positioned, but that is a lot of tab (23"s) for a Rage. I'm 6"s less on my Heat, and it seems like plenty, of course our water usually isn't that rough.
Chris B did an interesting experiment on his tabs to see what effect they were having. He removed the bottom plates completey, and tied off the rams.
Something you could try.

Steve

Great looking boat, instead of trading engines we could just trade boats.:lolhit:

Good lookin boat. Didn't know I was a dad.:drink:

Just keep watering it, it'll get bigger. I promise! Mine went from yours to a 28 Heat to a 35 Flame to a 42 Inferno. You should try and make Destin in Aug. Good Times!
