Nordic 28 Heat w/ 496 mag HO MPG?
So I'm thinking of buying an '06 Nordic Heat 28 with a 496 mag HO. I was reading a review and it said this boat gets ~3mpg cruising at 50mph. Is that even close to correct? What are y'all getting?
The only reason I question this review is b/c a good friend has an '07 or '08 Formula Fastech with the same motor and he says he doesn't get anywhere near that kind of mpg...
Here's the link to the review I read: http://features.boats.com/boat-conte...04/stepped-up/

I've never done a exact calc on my 02 Heat with the same motor -- but info I've read here, and other places, from several that do know quite a bit..
No way 3MPG. Not even at 35MPH.
As a general rule of thumb, to my driving behavior (mix of 35MPH - 45MPH cruises, and various druns WOT) -- I use avg. 1.8 2.0 MPG as a mental figure for a tank of gas.

Well, our current boat averages about 3mpg based on my rough hand calcs. According to boattest.com, best cruise is 3.5, WOT (51 - 53 mph) is 2.48 mpg. So, my hand calc seems about right.
Unfortunately boattest.com has no numbers for any Nordics. We have about a 40 mile round trip cruise each weekend. Assuming about 1.9 mpg and fuel at $3.50, the Nordic would cost me about $27 more per weekend. I guess that's no big deal. I would get there about 16 minutes faster in each direction.

The Heat should get better mileage than your friend's Formula. The hull efficiency is close, but the Fomula is laid up heavier. It takes more horsepower to power a heavier hull.
If you are looking for maximum mileage, you want to cruise at an RPM and speed, with the correct propeller, to maximize the efficiency of the hull. On most Heats, we have found that 5 blade propellers provide the best midrange efficiency and speed by reducing slip %.
Usually, somewhere in 3200/3500 RPM range is the best.
I would estimate a 496HO getting 2 mpg at max cruise and 1 mpg WOT.
And think how much cooler you'll look in the Nordic ....that's priceless.

Steve

I recently spent a week on Table Rock lake with a friend that has an identical 28 Heat as me. I have a 750 HP natuarlly aspirated engine, he as a 900 HP Whipple charged engine. We even have the same 29" pitch P5X props. We cruised together the entire week both covering right at 300 miles (on GPS). Mostly cruising around 35-40 with occasional high speed run. After all the fill ups he actually burned slightly less fuel than I did. My mpg for that trip averaged about 2.4 mpg.

Good to hear from you Bob. I'm still using the 29"P5-X as my daily driver too. Smooth water, rough water, cruising, light load, heavy load, or WOT, it still does it all. 750 NA, let me guess, 555", 565"?? Sounds cool.
Do your lakes have any water in them? I have a friend in Dallas, and he tells me it's been as dry as it has been hot.
Best Regards,
Steve
