I have the same ladder on my 25OL, It is a pain for sure, have to use your knee and then pull, I'm dumping mine!

I use the drive to get into my boat...But that is hard for kids.

I don't think is that bad. Since it doesn't fully retract on its own (never really has since new), I step up, kneel on the transom, and pull ladded up to full "in" position by hooking with my foot and pulling easily. I've often thought that for as much abuse as that ladder gets, pretty amazing is still operational after 10 seasons.

Aquastep?

If it's the same one that's on my Rage I recently shipped it back to Aquastep and they replace the springs for free and sent it back to me. Mine actually works pretty well.

Try popping the plastic plugs out of the end of the tubes and sticking a pressure washer in there. This will rinse out the sand that builds up over time. Then lube the moving parts with WD40 and you will see a big improvement (at least we did on two Nordics).
