600 merc
I am looking at a new Heat
Was considering only a 525 Have been approached with a deal on new one with a 600sci Any concern or issue on dependability of 600 vs 525? Supercharger? My last heat (which I regret selling) had a 496 and had trim tabs This boat with 600 does not have them. Would it be advisable not to get tabs? K planes is what I have thought of adding. Thoughts on this? What top speed might I expect. Got low 60s in my 06 with 496 I might be back in the navy soon? Any input really appreciated. |
Over 100 mph...
in the 29 Outer Limits. I'm sure the Heat would be heavier but that sounds like a very strong and fun combination!

jns,
The 600sci is a good reliable motor. You should easily see 80+ with it. After your warranty expires, it is upgradable to 800+ HP. More important than tabs are full dual cylinder hydraulic steering to the helm. Tabs are easy to add, and will aid the Heat's handling in certain conditions. Mine came with Bennetts, which I switched to single ram Eddie's. BTW, Merc may be running some specials on the 600s because they are introducing a new stroker 525 in 565 hp. I would still buy the 600. On the list of things I never hear....this boat is too fast, her t-ts are too big, this Crown Royal sucks :)...... Glad to hear you are coming back to the Nordic Navy. Regards, Steve |
Thanks Steve.
No question this would not be too fast! Does have full hydraulic steering. How do think XR1lower will hold up? Will be back with this one or another Appreciate your feedback. |
The XR drive will be fine up to about a Stage III Whipple kit. (775 hp).
On Dustin's dyno...the stock 600sci dynoed at 589 hp at the crank. Chris |

A 600 in a Heat sounds like sweet sweet set-up.
An easy future upgrade to 800HP from there is even sweeter. |
Oh yeah, I would ask your dealer and/or Nordic what X dimension they are currently using. If the transom hasn't been cut, I would ask for 18.25"s. If they are still sending them out at 19"s or 19.25"s, have them install a 1" spacer for you.
17" or 18" single ram tabs are fine for our boats. Move them out as close to the chines as you can. Like Chris said mount them up, making a small "step", and parallel to the vee of the hull. The XR will last a long time behind the 600sci. Just change your drive oil frequently, at the most every 40 hours. I change mine every 25 hours, or every time I change engine oil. Regards, Steve |
I had a 2007 Heat with a 496 and purchased a new Nordic a few months ago. I was doing the same thing as you...600 or 525. After owning it for a few months I am so glad I got the 600. I would have not been happy with the 525. My boat runs pretty damn good but will do the stg 2 kit a little down the road.

Thanks for all of your feedback!
All posts really helpful! I am feeling pretty good about the durability of the 600. Sounds like a non-issue. I do want to make sure I get the tabs and will most likely choose to go with Chris's suggestion on the Dana 900's if I pull the trigger on this boat. Will let you know what we decide to do. |
I have a 600 with 225 hours. The motor has been great. I am on my second drive. I have just installed a new rebuilt drive by Max Machine Worx with a new drive oil cooler. Basically, drilled the drive upper and circulates the drive oil through a heat exchanger by a 12v pump. 11 hours on Amsoil and it is still translucent. I will change the fluid now and I am hoping to double the life of the drive by using the cooler. I love the motor with the Whipple upgrade. Runs into the mid 90's, pulls strong (maybe too strong?) ?? One negative is that you need to be running towards a gas station when underway.. Have fun!

Funny thing is I have a good freind with a Rage and I have been begging him to buy that Heat, trying to buy a house though... It is a very clean graphics package.
|
Is the 700 sci package upgradable as well?
Thanks JF |
Yes...it is...
BUT You can only get the 700 with either a NXT or #6 drive. One was built near me with a 700/NXT package...and it doesnt handle very well. Chris P.S. My open bow heat did 80-82 with the stock 600 package, a one inch spacer, and a stock Bravo 28 or a 27 P5x With a Whipple stage III it did 91-93 with a .5 spacer, and the same props. It currently does 103-105 |
