gear ratio

Is anyone running a 1.65 gear ratio in a Rage? If so, what prop are you running? thanks

I went the other way...and went to a 1.35...discovering that a single engined v-bottom at speed is a balancing act...and that the more vertical the blades of the prop were...as opposed to larger pitch props where the blades become more and more parrallel to the water...allowed the boat to handle better...and therefore were faster.

ie...a 28 pitch prop with a 1.35 gear handles better and is faster than a 30 or 32 pitch prop with 1.5 gears... on my boat.

Just trying to help,

Chris

Brett,
That's hard to answer without knowing the power your running.
That is a high setup altitude setup but if your not running big power it should be fine. You will just need to pitch up about 3 inches from what a 1.5 Rage would run if your at or near sea level which is generally a 26.
If memory serves me correctly, a 496Mag Rage at 5000 feet ran a lab 26 or stock 24 with 1.65s at about 4600-4700 rpm. A 496HO Rage with 1.5 ran a labbed 24 to 5000 RPM. The HO was 2-3 mph faster.
If you have a 496 (Mag or HO) and are near sea level you might want to try a stock 28 and see where your at.
If you're running bigger power, then re-gearing as Chris mentioned above will be in order.
Dave

I'm running a 496HO with a whipple supercharger. Prop is a 30p 4 blade. I bought the boat from a guy who was the original owner and he picked everything out when he built the boat and he lived near Denver. I am at sea level, the guy had 2 different pullies for the charger, one for high altitude and the other was not for high altitude. He had the drive rebuilt by Max machine works I believe after he added the whipple to the engine. I really am not having any problems, just curious as to if it would make any sense to change anything up. Currently, I am running 85-86 at around 4900-5000rpm. I dont ever run wot, just for a few seconds here and there. Like I said, just curious what a higher or lower pitched prop would do if anything. Thanks

Hey Chris. That is some very interesting information. I am definately having hull balancing issues right now. I wish I had realized all this back when I rebuilt the drive and before all the investment in props for the 1.5 drive. Is there any down side to the 1.35 ratio? Thanks for the insight.

I am at 1000 ft running a stock 496 ho with the 1.65 drive. The prop i have on the boat right now is a hydromotive p4 29 and i am running 75 to 76 on gps
