Bumper Cleats on Rage
I'm considering installing some kind of cleat / pin on my Nordic Rage for the sole purpose of hanging bumpers, not mooring. The existing cleats are in poor locations for bumpers. I'm considering the Pop Up Mushroom cleats or possibly the pin type. Looking at 2ea on each side and looking for input from anyone that has done this. Advice and pictures would be great.
Thanks in advance.. Steven |
Go for the mushrooms, they have a cleaner look. The thought of moving fenders around the boat with a small yet heavy metal pin attached to the end of the line; eager to damage paint, gel, vinyl, etc. etc. just makes me nervous thinking about it. I know it's manageable, but it's still a liability. With mushrooms, you can use anyone's fender; not just your own. In a raft up, this takes place often.

Thanks for the feedback and sugestions.
I decided to go with the billet pop up cleats from Dana Marine. Very nice product, a bit more expensive but I was looking for something less intrusive and still functionable. Dana Marine sells some very nice components but their customer service has a alot to be desired, but that's for another discussion. I installed 4ea of the polished aluminum cleats, two on each side at the back of the windshield and towards the front of the windsheild. I through bolted them with stainless bolts and nylon lock nuts with aluminum backing plates. Hardware and backing plates were not supplied by Dana. I ended up drilling 12 holes in the boat, definately hard to process as four of them were with a 5/8 hole saw. I mesured, re measured multiple times, checked for clearances and used new sharp bits initiating the bits in reverse to drill through the gelcoat. I also put masking tape in the drill locations. Patience is the key to success. I am very happy with the install.
